| Would hitting them off the leading edge call them all to 'pop up' as the OP describes it, though? Surely that'd cause the ball to fly low?
The only two things I can think of where the ball has popped-up like that come from hitting down way too steeply on the ball, or hitting it so fat you slide the club right under the ball and fire it straight upwards. The former I've seen more with drivers and woods than irons though, and the latter I've only ever seen happen with wedges on soft ground.
