| WBL - we can get strong thunderstorms with no tornadic activity that can cause pretty bad damage from 'straight-line winds'. An Intense, one hour storm that can stir up a lot of trouble, downing trees, powerlines etc.
We had a 'microstorm' come through our neighborhood three years ago. It lasted 10 minutes. Blew down oak trees three feet in diameter. My next door neighbor's roof was penetrated down 8 feet through by a towering oak tree. I couldn't drive out of the neighborhood because so many trees were over the road.
This storm was about 500 yards wide. Outside of my immediate neighborhood - nobody knew about it. The golf course is two miles away and they said they got 'light showers for five minutes'.
In the meantime, I had the family huddled in the bathroom with the fear of God in our hearts...
I guess this is why there is so much fixation on weather radar around here...
