I'd still rather have a doppler radar unit for ~$85. It doesn't affect the club in any way and you can measure ball speed as well as clubhead speed.

Interestingly, I had a client approach me (they make custom LCDs) about designing a "small device for measuring clubhead speed and impact data" by using a thin strain gauge mounted to the clubhead. When I asked for more details it appears that it was Medicus. They said they had a device designed by someone else (probably this very device as they described something just like it) and wanted to take that packaging and add more clubhead/ball data -- basically a mini-launch monitor that attached to the club. Whether it was going to be a club supplied by Medicus (swing trainer) or user attached I am not sure but I could see a lot of problems with a user mounting something like that on their driver.

I gave them a quick proposal but they decided the development would be too expensive. I suspect they'll get some company in China to do it cheap. What they were wanting was a LOT of research and development work but I wouldn't be surprised to see Medicus market a product like this sometime in the next year or two.
