That's the only reason I think the shot yesterday wasn't like Winged Foot. At WF he could have played out sideways and still won the tournament. At Colonial he had to go for it. Sure, he could have played out sideways there as well. But then he would have had to get up and down for par to force a playoff (he had to assume that anyway.) I think the shot over the trees was the smart shot in this case. It's good to see that Phil still isn't afraid to gamble.
If there's one criticism I have of his play it's that he uses the driver too often and has to rely on his short game to bail him out. Makes for some inconsistent golf.
