I think that is where the real score lowering comes in.
Saving par !! I have been spanking out some longer drives lately, but am often left at the edge of the rough/woods. Branches block the usual wedge/ 9 iron shot onto the green, so been having to knock out a low 6 or 7 iron and run to the green. That often doesnt work perfect but if I leave myself a good chance at getting up and down, or at worse getting up and two putting, I feel I have kept it together and played it well.
One par and the rest bogey will put me under 90, and I am usually getting 5 to 7 pars in a round. My score is made or broken by the number of double bogies or worse.
Its like you said also ezra, going for the fantastic shot is really tempting fate and with bad odds.
