It's hard to do. Your gut will tell you you're being a wuss. Let your brain tell you you're more in control of your game.
On a 400 yard hole, hit 170 off the tee. Second shot of 150 yards leaves you a 70 yard pitch. I bet you hit that pitch shot on the green a high percentage of the time. Think of it - a 170 yard shot, a 150 yard shot, and a 70 yard shot - and you are putting for a 4 - which, if you are playing the hole as a Par 5, is a birdie putt.
