Wilson's Newest

This past weekend here at the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine the Semi-Annual Demo day took place. Most of the major companies came to show off their newest innovations and improvements to later comps. Of the 20+ companies in attendance none stood out more than that of Wilson. First let me say, our reasons for attending were for my cousin and his wayward tee escapades. It doesn't matter how many times you tell him its his swing, I think its because hes a man, he wants a new toy. So we gave a visit with the new Ping G10 and the Srixon Z-RW in mind. They were the first we hit, the G10 with its G5 resemblance and new attitude was just not it. Not what he wanted. The Srixon Z-RW was a more conventional style, shallow face tour styling, high trajectory and nice club. It was a for sure winner, but we opted to test some other makes and models. Some ok and some just a bust, and believe it or not the last club we both hit was truly the gem of the entire day. The Wilson Spine, built by Wilson Athletics. Its a moderately priced piece and has a world of technology built in it. Its not your typical driver, looking more like a Hi-Bore than anything, shallow face, weight from top moved to rear and squarer shape make it unique. Playing in Florida both my cousin and myself prefer the lower more boring trajectory with a drive, and this is the driver. Complimented with a never before used UST V2 HMOI shaft at nearly 1" over std make this driver stand out. My self personally probably played 30+ balls on the range with it; (9* X Flex 46" shaft) I play off a draw, not with a draw, this club helped correct the draw a touch and was less than 10-15 yards off center mark on driving range on all but a few shots, those were from my lack of familiarity with the club. As the range was lined with distance marks and accurately placed pins I was consistently hitting the 275 line and more than a few were 280+. It made me think twice about ridding my 907 D1 but if its not broke i am not going to fix it. If your looking for a new driver check out Wilson Staff's new line of clubs they will surprise you. Price of Wilson Spine $299.99

Did you hit the Fi5's by any chance? They are gorgeous irons, not sure how new they are.

New model Fi5's were released last year I believe.

I agree with Sand, I could never stand over that club and take it seriously. That is just me however and it may be somebody elses best friend.

I said the same thing when I first saw the Hibore, but it it works, then hell, I'd give it a go. I think it looks interesting enough to try and get a demo of one. I agree with Fuzzy Jnr. I think their new range looks sweet and I predice a comeback by Wislon in golf.

Their next move is to endorese a few of the younger rising stars, I see them rivaling Cobra.

Wilson

I did hit the forged Fi5 but only a few shots with the 4 or 5 iron. Nice blade with supreme feel, they have a nice cut muscle on them to aid just a touch with slightly off center hits.............. but the Pi7 irons which will also be released Nov 1, i did give a few whacks with. They are very nice irons, superior forgiveness and the feel of a soft carbon blade. They are truly a sweet iron. Yeah i agree, the spine is different and takes something to get used to its looks but its something to swing. I gave Wilson a good A with how and what they brought to the table this year.

I hate it when they come out with new miracle drivers that offer 30 more yards off the tee. I hate it. It's actually not too bad looking. I hate it. Damn, I wonder how it works. I hate it... Hate it....

marketing bs, don't believe the hype.
The only way to get more yardage is to improve your own swing.

Not entirely true. There are drivers that fit some better then others. And when you do find your fit it's amazing. (Damn, why did I sell that Rapture )...

Padraig Harrington isn't having a problem with the switch. And it takes a lot to get him to change clubs.

Warbird

I don't know if it gives ya 30 more yards but it made driving pretty easy........in theory. It was a nice club at a respectable price. I might have given a touch of distance +5 maybe. It was a surprisingly easy club to hit and to hit very well.

I don't think a club can magically give you an instant 30 yards, but if you get one that fits just right, it gives you the confidence to put a good swing on it, and it also gives you a better smash factor which will also increase distance. The extra confidence can allow you to really relax and just swing the club, and by the end of the round you can really get it out there. I know myself that when I'm really swinging the club well and getting it out of the sweet spot, and have the confidence to just go for it without any negative thoughts, I can get an extra 20 to 30 yards more than my average.

I agree that the only way to get more distance is through a better swing and/or better contact (smash factor), but the right club can help you do both.
