Maltby CT250 with BB Solutions 130S

So a very interesting night last night.

I only had 40 minutes at the range last night and a lot to achieve so I started off with some quick stretching exercises and then by limbering up with a few 6 irons, the old faithful.

I decided to start the experimenting with my new wedge, Maltby M Series Black Ion 56. Truth be told it is hard to get a feel off mats with range balls with a wedge. It sets up nice but I will have to take it to the course to try off real turf and decent balls to reach any conclusion. So the jury is still out on this one.

I then moved onto the 3 wood. I put out half a dozen or so nice little draws, making sure I completed my back swing and holding my plane. Nice form so I thought I would move onto my TEE driver with the original Limey put back in. I should never have messed with this set up.

So with my first swing I cracked one, literally!! I hit a great drive but the freaking head went flying off down the range following it. Luckily I got a glint off the range lights to see it finish about 100 yards down the field. Even luckier I was the only dude on the range at that time, so off I jogged to retrieve it. I now know what it feels like to be EZRA!!!

It snapped right at the neck, totally clean break. Not sure if there is a limit as to swapping out shafts on a driver (this had been put in 3 times) or if it was down to poor workmanship. Anyway I was in a slight state of shock. However as you all know good ho is never beaten! I have subsequently thought of a back up plan. It is now a good time to get the head stripped and repainted and I will then throw in the Aldila By You shaft I have sitting round and give that a go. Given that the TEE head is light the 70g shaft makes sense to me. We’ll see. That’s a 2008 experiment.

So anyway I digress. This whole thread is moving to it’s finale.

With no other driver to hit I moved onto the CT250 Solutions, half expecting that head to follow suit. It was so new it still had the plastic wrapper on the head. I decided to keep it on so I could pick up ball dispersion on the face, (photo to follow). Anyway the big news is...

THIS COMBO ROCKS!!!!

I cranked about 30 drives and have rarely had the pleasure of hitting such a sequence of shots. My results? I had one block, about 3 hooks but the rest were golden, ~25 long straight drives. Even on off centre hits this thing went. When I got it close to centre this thing went DEEP, real DEEP with a beautiful trajectory. It was like Bob Beaman, just hanging in the air. I had a slight tail wind but this thing was carrying 250 easy! And it felt so smooth. I was in a zone I can tell you.

Everyone here has commented about teeing this Bad Boy up high. In fact I had the highest tee selected on the auto-system but I still didn’t once get it above the middle of the club face. I was trying like hell but I’m not sure if it was me or the club, I just couldn’t. I will try it on Saturday with the longest tee I can find! I have a feeling I still haven't found that elusive sweet spot. But even hitting it low on the face this thing still went.

I now get this shaft. I think the TEE head was too light for it. I also tried the shaft graphics up (instead of down when I had it in the TEE). I’m not sure if it made a huge difference, perhaps, but worth commenting on.

It’s still early days but I am more than happy with my initial findings. This is an excellent club for the price. It is as forgiving as it is long. I really can’t see this being outperformed by any of your $500 drivers!

Aesthetically it looks a nice head with useful alignment graphics. The Maltby headcover is only average but I am not going to fault it too much there.

Overall I would give this an easy 9 outa 10. Still to try this out on the course but I am really looking forward to it and full of confidence.

Great story IG. 100 yards is a mighty fine shot. Lucky it wasn't a tee shot over water.

Excusing the tablecloth (rivaling a certain Mr. Ezra here!!) we have the following:

Pic 1 - note the ball marks on the club face - a lot nowhere near the centre

Pic 2 - Shaft, grip and Maltby cheapo headcover

Pic 3 - The new team, CT250 driver, TEE 3 wood and M-series wedge. I'm ready to roll!

Poor baby. Is anyone looking? Scurry back now. Shit shit shit. Safe! Puzzlement. Logic. Anger. More logic. Acceptance. Move on!!

Exactly! zaphod tip weighted the shaft 10g in the Ping G2 heads on our drivers because they were too light. Indacup (I think) clued him in on doing this. That shaft is silky smooth... right?

I still have to hit mine a few times.................the one time I hit it (when it still belonged to Warbirdlover) the ball went further and straighter on a familiar Par 5, then I'd ever hit a ball. I was very impressed. So much, that now it's MINE...............LOL.

I tried a Solutions shaft on a Intergra Soolong I had sitting around. 192 gram head I believe. So I tip weighted with the 7 gram tungsten pin weight. Previously that head had a ProLaunch Blue on it as was pedistran at best. With the Solutions weight combo it is a very good driver.

Currently I have my Maltby CT 250 with that very ProLaunch Blue shaft on it from the Integra and that combo is also killer.

Usage of three drivers I have.

Ping G2 -Solutions-----Every day driver. Long and high with roll makes it the longest

Maltby CT250----Long with lower Trajectory. Due to soft fairways here in Wisconsin not as total long as Ping This is my windy day driver.

Integra Soolong-Solutions-----My backup driver for cold weather. When it is below freezing I do not like to expose my "gamers" to cold. Even in warm weather this combo is no slouch.

As for teeing high with the Maltby I find just 1/2" above my stock tee height works for me.

GOOD LUCK and sounds like you have a winner combo there.

Whoa - what is this tip weighting all about?

I really liked the "feel" of the solutions in Eracers driver, but it was too light and in turn felt a little loose, and I was pulling it.

I PMed Rory about how I could get one installed in my 905R to play ~70 ish grams, but have not heard back from him.

BTW - Way to go IG on going against the norm and getting the red shaft. If I get one it will definitely be in red

It's not red, it's burgundy!! Tip weighting is adding special small weights to the end of the shaft to get the head weight up. Really can make a difference. Usually done (ask zaphod or Indacup) when the head weight is lighter then 200(?) g.

Tip weighting is used if the swing speed-club head weight combo is not sufficiently loading the shaft. Also I tend to like higher Swing weights and static weights so is one way of achieving that goal and still keep a low weight club head in play. The pin weights are epoxied onto the end of the shaft then inserted into the hosel in normal installation. 5 to 7 gram pin weights available.

I have not done a bore through such as Callaway or Titliest so do not know if this would work. Lyle or Indacup my have idea on this.

Before you re shaft to see if this is desirable one can add lead tape to club head. Will give you general idea if it is an improvement.

I think these are what zaphod uses. (I thought they were "thinner" when he showed me). If not maybe he can show us.....

dayum, great luck on nobody being there to see it IG. But then again, you could have had the bragging rights of swinging so hard you snapped the shaft. But after reading all these high praises, I can't wait for the 1st of the week when my CT250 with a UST V2 stiff arrives. I'll let ya'll know how I like it once I get to hit it but from what I've read, I know I'm going to love it.
