OK, listen up.
I got two new MALTBY heads in my latest Ho extravaganza. I twined them with respective Limey shafts. Here's how I got on in the Test Lab.
CT250 Professional / Graman 540UL - first off, the head is stunning. Superblack shiney, the top sets up a bit sharper than the CT250, more straight than a curve. It sets up lovely. Hard to tell from one range session how this compares over the standard CT250. Lovely high penetrating 3 yard draws, to about 240 / 250, time after time. Very happy with this, apart from one minor issue, the grip and shaft are slightly misaligned. Not sure how this is easily rectified but it didn't affect performance. I think I am going to love this combo.
CT250 15 degree 3 wood / Graman 540UL - I was a bit worried about this head, but when I saw it I had no worries. Rumors about the head being too big to hit shots off tight lies. But actually it has a shallow face, similar to Sonartec. Again, jet black look and square face just oozes confidence. My problem with 3 woods has generally getting a decent trajectory. I tend to drill them about 20 yards in height off the deck, which is an issue if I have to carry something. Playing links golf, this sometimes helps as I get tons of run. But with this thing I instantly got my "injection of trajectory". Lovely high but still penetrating shots, carrying about 220, time after time. (A few hooks thrown in to prove I wasn't Tiger Woods tho.) Felt like I was hitting a 5 or 7 wood with this thing. So easy to get it airborne.
I brought my TEE CB1 3 wood with Accra to use as a test. When I hit it, I got my low drilled 3 woods (as per the norm), switched back to the CT250 and got high launch shots. I am a happy man. Still to try into the wind to make sure I don't balloon it, but I doubt I will, as this is not a weak shot for me. Just goes to show there is a difference. To me it appeared that I was hitting a 2 wood TEE, and a 7 wood CT250, but both delivering similar distances (actually TEE would probably roll further). I'd love to get the lofts measured, both say 15 degrees, but I would bet big money that they are not.
CT250 / Aldila By You 80 S- I had a "By You" shaft kicking around so I decided to try it in the old CT 250 head. Much heavier feeling, very stable in terms of dispersion, but didn't feel that I was getting any major distance out of it. Only hit it 3 or 4 times, but shows quite a bit of promise, if I can build up the club head speed. One for future reference for sure.
Geek 5 wood with BB Solutions S - So I unveiled Rock's 5 wood. First off it was in pristine condition. It has a weird set-up, almost as if the face is closed. I gave it a few whacks anyway and was surprised at how straight I hit it. It was very easy to get airborne, in fact almost climbing too much, and nestling just behind the 200 yards marker. So it's a nice, easy to hit whacker! Unfortunately I have zero need for this club as currently my 2 iron and Cobra Pro baller are fighting it out for the 14th slot in the bag. So it will find a home elsewhere (perhaps the Kiwi Bro-in-law). But hey Thanks R35 I appreciate the generous prize.
So in summary Maltby make great heads. Get the right shaft on one of these bad boys and you will be more than surprised. I have tried most OEM clubs and yet to find anything close to the feel, forgiveness and playability of the CT250. The Professional (hopefully) will be cream on the cake!
Of course I will continue the quest to prove myself wrong!!
