Having tested and played literally hundreds of putters, maybe more, I really think that a good putter can play passably with an old croquet mallet. Now set up, feel, and aesthetics all play a roll. Personally, if its zero face balanced I know that I can putt with it. Having said that I played a Scotty Cameron Square Back and loved it until I 3-putted two greens. It went into a dark corner of my garage to do penance. Sometimes just changing putters can have an immediate positive effect.
