Removing a putter grip

About a few years ago, I went to a club builder who was able to remove my grip, cut the shaft, and reinstall the same grip. Today, I called a different club builder and they said they aren't allowed to use a certain solvent. Therefore, can not remove my grip and reinstall it. Is there a way I can safely remove it myself without damaging the grip?

That's odd, I've never heard of a club builder not being allowed to use a certain solvent, from my experience, any solvent will work. There are two ways that I can save a grip, either with a needle and a squirt can (looks like an old fashioned oil can with a trigger), or by sliding a long, flat metal piece in between the grip and the shaft and squirting solvent between the grip and shaft and then using the metal to break the tape bond. This can lead to the tape getting ripped inside the grip and getting stuck. The only ones that I have trouble saving are the two layer Winn grips.
