Vokey SM vs. Mizzy MP-R

Well I sold my 200 series vokeys and am in the market for a new wedge. I've had my heart set on the Mizzy MP-R 56* Black Ni wedge but have been courted lately by the Vokey Spin Milled 56* wedge. I want a wedge with a sole grind, a forged feel, and a lot of bite. I need the versatility of the sole grind because I am replacing the 56* and 60* with one wedge to simplify my play options around the green. I also am looking for advice on wether or not to get a 10* or 13* bounce on my 56. I understand that most golfers should play more bounce. Any truth to this? Anyone have any experience with comparing the two wedges, or advice? Thanks, bames

There's a difference in weight of those two clubs also (Vokey is lighter) which is why I went with the Vokey. I have a 10º bounce 56º and I think I'll like it once I find out how it plays better.

While I can't vouch for an extended period with the Vokey's, I can weigh in on the Mizzy's. Hopefully someone else can offer their side of the Vokey story.

For feel, I really haven't hit anything close to a Mizzy. Perhaps an RTG 588, but it still was beat out by the Mizuno. They spin the ball like mad, and have the correct weight (in my opinion. This is a touchy subject with Mizuno wedges, some say they weigh too much. To each their own.).

I reshafted mine with Rifle spinners for feel and touch and haven't looked back. Stock DG shafts are garbage. Get a real shaft in there and swing away.

If I could offer some advice on the BlNi you are toting, I would opt for the Raw Haze. The finish on both the chrome and the BlNi feel very hard, which is great if you want superior durability, but worse if you want feel. Which, in itself, is half a wedges job.

I've hit both the T and R series, and each offer their own pros and cons. The R's can be laid open with their grind to offer a variety of shots. The T series are a little more less bounce and have a more aggressive sole, which allows you to attack the ball in tough lies and have the confidence to get it out. Both series work well in the rough and on a tight lie.

As I said before, i am biased here. I really like the Mizuno wedges, so much so that they replaced my Callaway Vintage series 56/60 combo, and all of my Clevelands (588 RTG and Gunmetal 588's). It would take something very good to knock these out of my bag.

For what it's worth....

Thanks Rock, I have an old 588 that Eddie used to play. After I sold my Vokeys I was messing around with the 588 in the back yard. It just felt a little too light and a little dead to me. I know that I shouldn't compare a new MP-R with an old 588 but the fact that it felt too light gives me a hint of what I must prefer. Sounds like the Mizzy is the way to go, although I'm sure I will demo the Vokey SM just to be sure.

Any thoughts on 10* vs. 13* of bounce? 10* seems to be most popular but I read that most golfers would benefit from having more bounce. I don't know.

MP-R's are my second favorite wedge, you can really open up the faces on them.

Good to hear. I'm not a really aggressive iron/wedge player who generates a lot of backspin, so I need the help.

I have low bounce on all of mine. I would suggest that we play the same type of courses, but that might be a tad naive.

I like to attack the ball with an descending blow. I don't scoop it much, although I can. I had a 12* 588 Gunmetal 60* that I could hit about 10 feet in front of me, but 100 feet high. Worthless club in all but 1 in 1000 shots.

you've gotta take a look at Zodia and Scratch wedges (esp the tour ones) before you go and ho anything. The Scratch tour ones look totally awesome. Check these pics of them in real life:

Whoa - $300! I was suprised by that. They look sweet, and I would love to play a round with one, but I think I will hold off on those until the kids are out of the house. Where did you get yours?

I don't really have enough rounds under my belt with the MP-R to have a real opinion. For me it was a matter of weight alone, for which I cannot stand the Vokey.

So far, so good though. I see no reason to believe it will not suit my needs very well. I likely would have got the 52* as well, but I wanted a little more bounce on the 52* so I opted for the Ping Tour. They all seem to feel relatively the same to me, which having played my Ping 60* for a couple years, it is a very good feeling.

They weigh in at
60* 480g
56* 486g
52* 470g
See signature for the exact specs

those pics aren't mine - should've said before, sorry! Credit goes to some lucky sod on GolfWRX who got them a few weeks ago. Can't stop thinking about them though - only a matter of time before i get a 52 and 58 deg i think.

SM SM SM SM SM SM SM SM SM SM SM SM SM SM SM SM SM SM SM SM SM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely amazing wedges and spin like hell, and i attack the ball pretty shallowly. I dont know what these guys are saying, but mine feel like the heaviest wedges ive ever played, nothing in any shop felt heaver, the mizzys felt like one of the lighter ones? So i dont know what u boys are doing, or maybe im the crazy one. Dont count out the Spin Milleds, theres too many anti Titleist/pro mizuno ppl on here to denounce my good old Titleists!

Although other than Nike and Titleist balls, they tear the sh*t outta every other ball, especially callaways.
