Sergio's Hitting a Burner

Just saw a pic of him on Yahoo Sports golf gallery at Augusta and he's hitting a Burner. Go figure....

When TM is paying you the bucks, you'll hit whatever they tell you to hit.

These guys all try different drivers and putters in practice rounds and if they like it they play it, if not they don't. I doubt that they are forced by TM to play a club they don't like.

Then why would a guy like David Toms require the permission by TM for him to play his old Cleveland Quad fairway? Don't you think Toms could hit the TP just as well?

Guys have clubs they like, but the contract says 14 TM clubs. Money talks. But some guys stick to their guns. They just need it in writing. Tiger (Scotty Cameron), Toms (Quad), ect.

Lightbulb Burner

Forget the shaft but what do you guys think about the head of the burner? Just the head... Lets say with diamana shaft... Would it work better?

Maybe but the regular one I tried (non-TP) was a hook machine. That face has got to be 2 or 3 degrees closed.

Yeah, the Non-TP sucked for me. I'd like to try the TP is it's dead square. I'll most likely have one by the end of year used if they are only starting at $399.

What's he got for a shaft in there? He was playing a 105g last year, right?

None of these guys are stupid enough to sign a contract to play a club they don't like. Toms or any other pro must discuss these things before signing a contract.

I'm sure they do. But I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts that the conversation goes something like this:

TM: "OK, you will play the newest driver in TM's lineup as they are released. That pays 3 million a year. You will also play the irons for another 2 million, and the wedges are another 1.5 mill.

Toms : "Well, I want to play my own fairways."

TM: "Fine, go for it. You just don't get the 1.5 million we would pay you to play them."

Toms: "Oh. Well, i'm pretty sure I can make 1.5 million this year, so i'm happy with that."

OR

Callaway "Ernie, you must play all Callaway/Odyssey stuff on 2007"

Ernie: "But I love my vokeys. I want to play them still."

Callaway: "No deal. We'll pay you 10 million a season to play Callaway stuff, plus 15% of sales of anything you play, not to mention promo dollars."

Ernie: "The Vokeys aren't that great anyways. X-Tours it is! (high fives Caddie)"

Money talks.

I agree to a point. I think it might go a little more like this. Ernie, whatever you need as far as wedges, irons, etc. We can make them look and feel just like your vokeys, no prob. Our guys will make you 20 or so wedges, just try them and tell us which one you like and we will put the callaway stamp on it. Throw it in your bag, and it's a win win.

Agreed. But the point is they MUST play whatever is new and flashy. If that means new wedges for Ernie 4 months after his X-Tours get grooved in, then so be it.

He's an employee and a billboard, plain and simple.

Oh how I wish I could be a billboard.

Is the putter and ball part of Ernie's contract? This is the only real thing (if I were him and I'm talking retail stuff here) that's I wouldn't want to give up.

Well, that head's big enough so that if it doesn't work out as a driver, Sergio could cut a hole in the top of it and use it as a spitoon.
