    Grip question...

Is there some sort of rule of thumb about grips and how 'hard' 'soft' you want to lean toawrds as far as swing speed goes?

Like if you swing real hard would you want a harder grip or if you're a softer swinger, maybe a softer grip? Vice versa?

I don't know if that makes sense, but I;m not talking just the surface feel but the actual firmness of the grip, spongey vs. hard.

Or any other general rules on this sort of thing.

I'm gonna re-grip these wedges I have and maybe my driver in the near future and am curious.

Cleveland Hi-Bore, 9.5*, Aldila NV Stiff
TaylorMade R5 XL, 4-9 Irons, reg. steel
    Mizzuno MP.001 3W, Aldila NV
Nickent 3DX DC Hybrid 4/23*, stiff

Adams 'Tom Watson' SW56-13, GW 52*, LW 60*
    Ogio Nitrous
    Callaway Warbird

  2. It's really matter of preference. I like something firm. The Decade's are a bit expensive but well worth it IMO for the wedges. I also have a GPTV cord that came on my 3W and it's growing on me. I wish I'd stuck with a firmer grip on my irons. I was going to get the Lamkin Crossline blacks but then at the last minute wanted V-55's. I really don't care for them. Especially since I alinged the the lines with the head square and it really just doesn't fit my grip.

Nothing beats the Tour Velvet Full Cord. I've used the Decades a few times but always end up back with the Cords.

As far as the original question. It's more a matter of what feels better to you. John Daly uses Winn grips which are generally considered to be a softer grip and he swings hard. I personally found that the softer the grip, the less feedback I get from impact. With wedges I want the grip to be thinner so that I feel more. However, it comes down to what fits you better. It is far more important to have the right size grip (standard, midsize, jumbo) than the materials used to make them.

Do you wear a glove? Do the cords tear it up if so?

  5. I just went to the V55's on my irons with the hand alignment facing down. This is a great cord grip if you like the feel of them and you can put the alignment down so it doesn't bother you when looking at them.

I do wear a glove and the cords don't tear it up too badly. One of the reasons they don't is that I change gloves every six holes or so.

  7. I've liked the GP tour velvet cord grip on my driver and it didn't seem to wear my glove excessively. I use about 2 gloves a summer playing quite a bit. I really like the Decade and am going to try the dual durameter also. So far the Decade is my grip of choice.

The big advantages to Harder grips and specifically cord is how they play in rain as well as humidity. The other is they seem to last at least twice as long.

The obvious downside is the feel. I could care less about feel after the first time I had a hard time holding onto my club in the rain and when my hands would sweat. Ruined about 2 months of my summer each year for the first 3-4 years prior to finding out about Cord Grips

They are a little rougher on gloves, but for me it was not a ton different as you have the same outcome on gloves if you strangle the club because you can't hold onto it, and the shot outcome is likely much worse.

Check out Golf Prides website, their comparisons will give you a pretty good idea and you will notice the softer the feel, the shorter the life, and the worse they are in rain. So I guess if I never played in heat or rain I would likely use a softer grip, but in my current circumstances I will likely never use anything but the Golf Pride Tour Wrap Full Cords unless I move.
