Thinking about getting my driver shortened.

Well, Ive been thinking about maybe a 45" driver isnt the best for me. Im fairly short (5'10) and am not sure how much this would benefit me. Also, how much will this ordeal cost? I might want to go down to 44" or maybe 43.5". How does one get fitted for the best length? Thanks guys.

Hell, you're a giant. I'm only 5'7".

Instead of shortening it right away and maybe regretting it, put a piece of electrical tape 1.5" from the butt and choke down. That's what I've been doing and it works wonders.

Theres a thought, i can never choke down on anything, it just feels wierd to me. But, i'd hate to chop a $300 shaft. Although, it would give me an excuse to throw a redboard or creation in there. hmm.

I shortened mine down to 44 ½ and I love it. I’m hitting it straight, solid and a lot more consistent. Be careful about hacking too much off every ½ you cut off will reduce the swing weight by three points. I went to a heavier 75g shaft cut off and maintained a D3 swing weight with out having to add any weight to the head.
Do a search about shorting a driver there have been many good threads on this site with lots of good information.

make sure you need it... and 5'10 isnt too short... its right at average... maybe 1" under...

i think that it would be absolutely terrible to cut down a $150+ shaft, only to find out it is garbage now...

I went down to 44.75 and like it. The guy I played with Sat. has the Superquad with the stock shaft. He held it, adressed it, swung it twice and said "You'll get more accuracy, huh, seems shorter and stiffer". He noticed the lenght even though it's probably less than 1/2" shorter than what he has.

One thing to remember... grips are a whole lot cheaper than shafts, go a little at first.

I read somewhere that 5' 10" and 160lbs is the perfect build for the golf swing. Just ask David Toms and Sergio Garcia and me

Loads of other slight guys under 6 feet too that can bomb it.... Camillo, Sabatini, come to mind

Larda$$... I weighed myself this morning... 142.5

I immediately put a nicotine patch on and went to the store... I ate 5 meals today and drank a half gallon of milk. Up to 145 now. lol.

I gotta get back up around 170. Anyway, twofast is around 5'10 and he bombs it past me, I'm a good 2"+ taller.

Im 6'2 and i play my driver at 44.6". Its a lot easier to control, and isnt too short. I get enough distance from the 230lbs I have behind my swing

Its not about size at all, i have a friend whose 5'4 and plays a 50" driver, and another whose 6'7 with a 44" driver. Its just what works best for you and puts it in the fw the best.

Work on it with the electrical tape and find out what wrks best for you.

length has nothing to do with size. Anybody see Sean O'hair bombing 330 yard drives or the 241 yard 4 iron he hit?
Whats he weight....85-90 pounds?

I would think of doing what Doc mentioned on just gripping down to start. I added some lead tape to the head on mine and gripped down for a few weeks. Kinda like the feel, so when I re-gripped it last week I went ahead and took an inch off the butt, and added enough tape back to the head to get the same swing weight as before. Much more control and actually increased my swing speed about 5 MPH, and gained considerable yardage as a matter of control more than speed. Actually averaging the distance I used to a couple years ago.

If you do decide to do it, I would recommend have a clubmaker do so unless you are certain the results and know you can live with the creation as it will change the characteristics of the shaft unless done correctly. I was kind of up in the air about that part, but figured if it didn't work I would take it in and wouldn't mind if it had to be cut down more. The trim code for my Aldila NV on a driver is to trim it from the butt, where as I understand with some you are supposed to do from both sides. I also wasn't worried if it gave me a little higher trajectory or even did not maintain the same stiffness buy not trimming the tip as even if it had more flex from the weight on the head I would not be upset.

And as mentioned, I am 6'1" and it had nothing to do with height, simply a matter of control.

Thought about doing my FW's as well, but since I have abandoned my 3w in favor of my 4 wedges and 5i and only carry a 5w now , I figure the extra length on it is not a bad thing as it plays like a 4w.
