re shafting questions

i'm lookin to reshaft my ping g5 10.5*.. it currently has a graffaloy prolaunch blue shaft 65g regular flex.. it is WAY to flexible for me.. my swing was clocked at a consistant 105mph.. i want something alot stiffer and with a lower ball flight.. between the loft and the regular flex shaft, my balls go sky high and only travel around 225.. i hate it..

also the shaft is 42 3/8".. to me it feels a little long and sometimes on my back swing i feel like i dont have very much control over it.. honestly, my 3 wood with a 65g stiff flex prolaunch blue feels way better and i have alot more control over it with the shorter length.. should i possible have the new shaft cut to around 41.5"? maybe 41.75"?

Whoa. Are you sure you are measuring the driver correctly? I take it it isn't stock, off the rack, and you've had it modified?

What is your wrist-to-floor measurement?

With a 105 swing speed, this definitely points toward a stiff shaft in most cases. If that length driver is correct (standard stock from the OEM's is 45-46". Pro's average 44.5". Shorter is better, to a point) it would depend on how you got to that length.

If all that was done was to cut off the length from the butt end, that will make the swingweight WAY too light. If that is the case it is most likely the reason you don't have any control.

Let us know your wrist to floor. Also, make sure you are measuring the length of the club correctly. Put the club in the playing position, then take a steel tape measure from the ground at the heel of the club up the bottom of the shaft to the end of the grip and read the length.

Measure it like this:

DaveT's Golf Club Design Notes

It'll make it easier to compare apples to apples in making recommendations.

i think he is talking about just the shaft length... but if he is talking about playing length, then wow... there is no way anyone should play a driver with a total length of 42...

stiff sounds like it fits you, but you need to demo, demo, demo.... try to find a shaft that fits YOU...

i guess i measured it wrong.. i measured from where the shaft connects to the head of the driver to the end of the handle..

also your right i think it has been reshafted.. i picked up the driver in trade for a car detail..

and i guess its a perfect week for me to look into shafts.. ping is having a demo day at our local course on saturday

Sorry, more of an indirect question there.

you need to measure the playing length, which will be the grip to the bottom of the club... it should be 45" or around 45"...

and yes, you should head on over to the demo day, and just try out every shaft they have in their set of g5's...

The G5 stock length is 45 3/4", and I think the PL is a stock offering. Chances are this is a stock club.

yeah its off the sweet spot.. the ball goes straight up in the air then just dies.. when i take some off the swing (alot actually) i have alot less ball flight and it travels around 260 but i know thats not where it should be at all.. thats why i wanna know about getting it re shafted..

and theres still alot of times where i miss hit because i feel like i can barely control the club because its so long for me

J.J., we need more information before we can give you some really bad advice.

First of all, how old are you? Are you through growing in height?

Second, stand erect and measure from the middle of your wrists to the floor, in inches, preferably. Give us that info, please, and we will make wild guesses, er, compute your optimum driver length.
