True Temper Iron Shafts

This is just a bit of trivia. A metallurgical guru friend of mine (a Professor who I help on some of his consulting projects ocassionally) was in the True Temper factory last week. They make 115,000 shafts EACH day (and sell every one)! I thought you'd get a kick out of that. I also know how much it costs them to make each shaft but I can't divulge that information, LOL!!

interesting tid bit.... I'd be curious to know how many they scrap on any given day - or the scrap %'s for stepped vs stepless shafts

One of the great things about my job is that I get to visit and see all kinds of manufacturers. Some are suppliers and some are clients. I hardly ever pass by the chance to go see how someone makes whatever it is they make. Consequently, I have developed a real appreciation when someone produces a quality product as it's never as easy as anyone thinks it should be.

The first company I worked for in the early 80's was a sister company to TrueTemper. I got to design a consumer golf swing trainer for them. It was one of the more cool design projects I've ever worked on and I got the project assigned to me because the boss knew I was an avid golfer (and a good design engineer too ). It was pretty cool getting to go to the driving range and hit balls and get paid too.

I got to go to TrueTemper's R&D labs and see the original "Iron Byron" hit golf balls. That was very cool. We also got to test the swing trainer I designed on the Iron Byron. It was both cool and depressing seeing a swing that repeated itself to within a few 1/10's of a percent every time. It was a club ho's paradise though -- they had just about every club, shaft and ball made at the time available to hit.
