Question for Lyle or the other clubmakers here

Do you normally use shafting beads when you shaft iron heads and steel shafts?

Just asking because I have some parts coming for a new set of wedges and most of my work up until now has been with graphite shafts or putters. Everything steel that I've shafted to this point has been a "snug fit" and I haven't used beads but I thought I would ask those with more experience.

others certainly have more experience, but the "beads" are really more like dust

seems to me to just thinken the epoxy a bit - make a snug fit "snugger" - not sure thinken is the right word, but I added epoxy to the tip, inserted it into the club, pulled it out, then sprinkled on the shafting beads, and reinserted - a bit tighter

I use the Golfsmith stuff with the beads already in the mix.

The beads just make sure your shafts are centered in the hosel. In my iron reshafts, I've never had this problem. Just shaft them and go.

Another note that I just thought of on this....the beads supply a contact area that adhere the epoxy better for stubborn jobs. So, if you have a shaft that has less than stellar adhesive properties (like the Epic, as an example), the shafting beads create more surface area for bonding.

Sorry I didn't touch on this earlier.

I always use them and have been told by other clubmakers that it actually strengthens the bond a bit which would lend creedence to Rocks comment.

I use them on every shaft I install. They do indeed strengthen the epoxy bond.

Well it makes sense to my engineering side that they would make the bond stronger which is why I asked. I've used them in the last irons I built and a few of the drivers I've worked on. I didn't with the putters though. I'll just use them all the time as they are cheap and I've got lots of the stuff.

We used to use what was called "microballoons" back when I built a lot of RC models. I just googled it and it's the same stuff. We used it for the same reasons too.

Thanks again!
