Arrow Fairway wood usage

Does anyone use fairway wood to get out of the medium rough when you are still quite some distance away from the hole? I find it difficult to use fairway wood in the rough, balloon hybrids, so my only choice remaining is 3 iron in order to get out of the rough and get as much distance as possible. Any advice on how I could get as much distance as possible but from a mid rough? Is it advisable to use a fairway from a rough?

Fairway woods always get caught up in the thick rough for me. I use the lowest lofted iron I think I can get out with. Usually 5-iron is the lowest loft I have any luck with. If the rough isn't thick I've hit a 3-wood or hybrid out of it okay.

I'll hit my 3W if the ball is teed up on the blades. As for a hybrid, I find that my Md performs quite well out of the thick stuff. Just got to play it back a bit and hold on.

That's the key to hitting hybrids out of the rough - a very firm grip and I can muscle mine out of pretty much anything. The slightest bit of looseness in the grip and the grass can rip the club face round from your hands and cause slices, tops and the ballooning you talk about.

A fairway wood will cut through the rough better than an iron for me.With an iron, the grass can get tangled around the head, this is the traditional view anyway.Just choke down and punch it out

Who needs a FW wood? I popped one up into the rough about 20yds. with my driver today... Like the famous photo. I got so pissed off I hit my driver again out of the rough approximately 230yds. up the fairway with a little cut. lol. And this was not sitting up either, I was amazed I caught it that well. I was just so mad I didn't care.

I normally will pretty much play any club from a decent lie or in weak rough. The thick stuff? If it's down forget it. Pro's can't even hit out of that crap, I use a SW and make sure it's out.

If it's relatively short rough, like I see most of the places I've played I'll use the fairway wood. This MP001 I got from VTdivot fires missiles, man.

If the rough is longer I'll use my hybrid and it seems to work pretty well. Real long I go with 7 iron or higher and just try to knock it on the fairway with a little distance on it. Like Ezra said, I just try to make sure it gets out of there and play on.

Depends on how far down it is, my likely hood of making the green on a good shot, and how bad I need one less stroke.

More often than not I take my 3 iron.

I have found that if I try to hit my hybrids like I was trying to hit a punch shot out of medium ruugh, it gets up nice; but keeps a low flight. About like a 3 iron off the fairway.

Great, both you and Jules are killing the 3W's I sold you, while my search continues.

That thing was a cannon for me off the tee, but I couldn't hit it from the fairway. Sounds to me like it's probably user error
