My balls don't do what they should!

I've got to a point now where I need to start using the same balls every time I play instead of whatever I happen to find/win or buy as they are on offer. However, I don't know what to buy. I don't have the time or money to buy several types to try them out so I'm using the collective experience of ST'ers to my benefit.

I've just lost my last Pro V1 from two dozen I was given last year but even though I could see their benefits I don't think they suited me. Can you suggest a ball that has the following attributes please:

1) Good control, able to stop quickly but won't crucify you if you hit a slightly too strong fade.
2) Reasonable distance and doesn't sound like you've just hit a lump of putty (which proV1's do a little).
3) Durable.
4) Decent Price (if you know an online source that does a particularly good deal then let me know please).

My instinctive choice is ProV1x but I'd rather not spend so much just because of the name.

I will see which ball crops up the most and trust your collective judgment.

Thanks.

Nike One Black
Callaway HX Tour
Maxfli Tour Fire

Cheaper balls

TopFlite D2 "feel"
Callaway HX Hot
Bridgestone E5 or E6

(BTW, my balls don't do what they're supposed to anymore either but I chalk it up to age.)

Top Flite D2 Feel. $15.99 for a 15 pack. Here is a good review.

JS's Top Flite D2 FEEl review.

I also like the Prov1X characteristics over the V1. I get more distance off the driver, less spin and find it easier to control wedge shots as I'm not a big fly/spin guy, more a land it and run it out.

My favorite cheaper replacements are the NXT (not tour) and the Maxfli Noodle (long and soft). The old Noodle never fails to impress me. I switched to one yesteday on a little island green with 2 to play. Stuck that shot and parred. Then took the long 18th with a hybrid approach out of the rough from over 200yds. to 12ft. That hole was the matchbreaker and I had no problem trusting the Noodle to get the job done.

I too like the NXT's and Noodles for moderate price balls but I do intend on giving the Top Flight D2 green a chance.

You are a trip WBL. You just named 6 balls pretty much covering the entire spectrum of playing characteristics.

Indeed. If equally enthusiastic people could please refine their advice to just one or two at the most it will help with my dilemma

Bridgestone e6

It's as straight and nearly as long as the HX Hot, but will actually stop when hit onto a green.

Top Flite D2 Feel into an early lead and the info on it seems to be what I'm after, however it looks ugly and that might put me off a bit.

I'm keeping an open mind though so please keep them coming.

The blackmax is a pretty solid ball that you can get very inexpensively now. Dick's sent my a coupon: 3 doz balls for 25$. However, I just bought some D2 Feel, and I'm trying those out today. They're cheaper generally, and from what I've heard these balls are THE balls.

I've been playing the OLD Noodle (Long and Soft) but didn't mention since he said he doesn't like soft balls. I've also had good luck with it Ez. DON'T get the "LONGER and SOFT" Noodles though. They won't last one hole.

Since it sounds like you are used to the ProV, maybe you could pick up the X-outs and save a bundle yet still have the same feel you are used to ? Just an idea.

I've been addicted to Cal. HX Tour 56's for the last year....but I must find something more in my budget soon. Just getting solid enough for the larger, nicer, more expensive courses...but can't afford $3.33ea. balls and the nice courses :-)

Peace!
