First you need to remove any chrome, but unless you have the equipment and know-how to do a reverse-plating, I think a few hours in pure chlorine bleach, followed by repeated dunking/drying cycles in salt water, would probably accomplish it.

WBL - bleach kills chrome, right?

The reason chrome alloyed steels don't rust is the chromium, in contact with air, puts on a very thin "oxide" layer that protects it from moisture. Anything (bleach) that will keep this oxide layer off long enough for rust to start works. Especially if you alternate it with salt water. Stainless steel rifles used in Alaska can still rust, especially when left out near coastal areas (salt water). Chrome plated steel (not that common with irons) will probably not rust because it is pure chromium and not alloyed with steel (iron). And could be quite deep so removing it would not be a good idea.

If you think I'm going to lay out a procedure for you (considering I'm guessing about what would work) and have you follow it, only to find your clubheads sitting in a puddle at the bottom of a vat, you are sadly mistaken.

I think WBL (who is a metallurgist) confirmed that a couple of hours in a bleach bath would take off the outer layer of chromium. Then you could soak them in salt water, let them dry, repeat a few times until rusted.

Keep in mind that once they've started rusting, they will probably continue to rust forever.

But again - I'm guessing here, and won't be held accountable for the results - good or bad...

I'd strongly advise against this, could really screw up your irons beyond reasonable repair.
