Fairway woods

What loft is a 3 wood? seems like around 15*? if so then a 2 iron is 16* how much more distance does that 1 * of loft give? What I'm looking for is to get a 3 wood and a hybrid club that is equal to a 2 iron.......I'm thinking a 2 iron and a 5 wood gets about the same distance?

A 3wood is generally 15*.
A 2iron and a 5wood generally give the same distance on a good hit.
A 17-19* hybrid would hit the ball as far a 2iron and would be much easier to hit.

The 1* of loft does not add a whole lot of distance, a 3W's longer shaft and wider swing add the distance but is not quite as accurate as a shorter shaft and more upright swing. Adam's info on equivilents is right on the money.

All hybrids are different.

I hit my J33 21* as far as a 2 iron. But for TM I need the 19*

Agreed. I hit a 23* Sonartec near 20yds. longer than a 23* Nickent. Hit the old TM RescueTP 19* nearly the same as the new one in a 21*. Most of this has to do with spin.

The loft of the 2 iron depends on the set, the two iron in all three sets that I use is 19 degrees, so I use a 3 hybrid (also 19*) to replace my 2 iron and 5 wood.

Thanks for the replies, I have a 3H that is 20* loft and my driver is 9.5* loft right now I have in my bag 10 clubs 3H-PW, putter and driver. I'm thinking about getting 3 more wedges and something between my driver and hybrid or would that be too big of a gap for just one club to cover between the driver and 3H?

While generally I have always heard, a 5w does replace a 2i. Although, based on my experience on hitting a very large number of hybrids, I find almost all 2i hybrids to play more like a 7w because of the shorter shaft length. Although you get into this entire thing of different lofted FW's and different lofted hybrids. For my game, generally I find hybrids to play about 2* shorter than the same lofted FW , due to the length of the shaft. So I carry a 23* and 18* hybrid then a 17* 5W, which is more like a 4w. This setup gives me about the same as my 20* 7w. Which is about a 20 yard gap between each of the clubs.

Again, this is just me and likely relates to quite a few of the people I play with on a normal basis, I have heard different results with different people.

I hit my 2i hybrid about the same distance as my 5 wood when I hit it well. I've stopped carrying the 5 wood for the most part since I can hit a wider variety of shots with the hybrid and I seem to face a lot of different shots/conditions from that range (190-210 yds.)

I'm just getting back on my game though so that could change. Last Friday when I played, my 2i hybrid was a good friend to have along for the round -- I ended up hitting a lot of good shots with it.

Club mix in the bag is an interesting subject and I think you have to match the clubs with how you play and your overall game, based on which clubs will help you score the best.

I find exactly the same thing. A few weeks ago I was trying to sort the gap out between my 4w and 22* hybrid, so tried a load of clubs in the simulator down at Golf Galaxy. In the end it came down to a 19* Halo, 19* G5 hybrid, 20* Baffler and 22* Cleveland Launcher 7w. All of them hit the ball pretty much the same distance, but the 7w got the ball up the easiest and was by far the most consistent.

For an absolute hybrid-lover like me it was quite a revelation to end up buying the 7w!
