Thread: MP60 BABY!!!

  1. Exclamation MP60 BABY!!!

Got rid or my Taylormade Rac LTII, returned my X-20 Tour and got myself a MP60!!! WOW!!! What have I been missing!!! Playing cast for the last 1 and a half years I didn't know what I was missing. I always thought people were exaggerating when they said cast and forged were different... Now I know... Woooo hooooo!!!!

Edit: What is the best way to clean the club head? Also, do I need to cover the irons with head covers since they can get chipped easily?

Clean the clubs using hot, soapy water, or just hot water, with a cloth or a sponge or something.

Use club covers if you want. Personally, I think they look stupid, so I don't use them (No offence to anyone who does), and I think they are a bit of a pain to have to remove and put on again before and after EVERY shot... I've had my forged Srixons for about 2 months, and I'm not seeing a lot of damage to them. A few dings here and there, but nothing that would make me want club covers.

If you clean them regularly and keep them clean, the dings are a lot less noticeable.

Yeah, should work fine. I use a toothbrush on the grooves, on the rare occasion I actually clean my sticks, but i've got a small plastic groove cleaner attached to my bag which I use in between shots...

Also, either let them dry naturally or use a microfiber type of towel... Otherwise, whenever I dry them with a normal towel, I get lots of threads sticking to the clubheads.

Also, stating the obvious, but never use anything like a wire brush, as all this will do is scratch the clubs badly.

Also... Make sure the water you use is just warm instead of boiling, as this will possibly loosen the ferrules on the clubs...

Yeah I read this somewhere before but is it a fact or just an assumption that the clubs will rust? I was thinking the clubs will rust if you put on the wet cover and leave them on right? Yeah... Cover is cumbersome though...

Your clubs are chrome finish, I believe? I'm not certain, and someone correct me if i'm wrong, but over time, the finish on the face will ware down, and in the grooves, and if your iron covers keep in moisture, the faces may start to rust after a while...

I'd guess they're fine if you just use them to protect your irons on the course, but off the course when you bring your clubs inside, you take them off and dry them.

As far as iron covers, you may find some useful information in the link below that I started when I bought my MP-60's. Including pictures of the little nicks I got on my MP-60's after a mere two rounds without them. Was enough to sell me on them, but we do play a course that is pretty bumpy in a cart.

Iron Condoms a necessity or just a sure sign of Geekdom

... also very nice to have if you travel much.

For cleaning I just use a regular club brush and wet towel. Although last week I bought one of those dual ball and club cleaners that you fill with soapy water see on carts. Seemed to work real well and much faster.

Some rust info fyi. Forged clubs are made from low alloy plain carbon steel to allow forging and also for your "feel". This steel is VERY prone to rusting. Obviously the moisture in the air can cause rust. Water sitting on the clubs for any length of time (hours) is a sure way to form rust. Heat speeds up the reaction (oxygen from H2O entering steel). Remember steel is mostly "iron" (Fe). Iron oxide is rust!! SO!!!

Steel, over time, forms a very thin "oxide" layer on the surface which helps protect it from rusting. Stainless steels form this much faster and deeper which is what keeps them from rusting (although stainless steel can rust). When you "blast" a steel part clean (or wire brush it) it can look nice BUT you've removed this oxide layer (washing doesn't) and exposed "fresh metal" to the moisture. I've seen freshly blasted steel (that hasn't been immediately oiled) rust in "minutes", literally.

Our transmission company puts a rust preventative in the washing solutions. For long storage we spray on a rust preventative IMMEDIATELY after washing. A light oil will do the same for a short period of time. I've had a lab do "accelerated salt bath" testing to test "rust preventatives". Most don't keep rust off for very long.

Leather iron covers will hold any moisture in and increase the risk of rusting. I only put on iron covers on the irons near my graphite driver shaft to prevent dinging it up but I found some soft cloth covers which will actually absorb any moisture. I only leave these on when transporting the clubs.

After washing, if you really don't want rust on your forged irons, use a light oil coating. You shouldn't even notice it on them.

And finally this is why I play stainless steel Ping irons

i can see iron covers if you ride most often.

if you walk I don't see a whole lot of need for them but thats just me....especially with clubs as beautiful as MP-60s....let 'em shine for your playing partners to gawk at.

On the rust issue, go to Mizuno's website under FAQ. There is one there about covers and Mizzy specifically recommends against them.

You'll need to read through them as I don't think the specific question is about covers, but the answer addresses this issue.

  14. Mizuno has made great strides in their chroming from the older MP model days.

Everything since the MP-32 is like double dipped or something so the chrome on the face won't wear as fast as it used to.

A friend of mine had 2 sets of MX something or over forged cavity things about 4 years ago. He bought the 1st set from our club pro who told him he should use covers to stop them dinging up and sold him some. After a couple of weeks they started rusting so the pro sent them back and Mizuno replaced them. Same thing happened with the 2nd set so the pro refunded him for the covers and told him to leave them 'top less' as recommended by Mizzy. I have used covers in the past and if you use the soft ones if you just put a few drops of oil in them on regular occasions you will have no problems. I now prefer to show my irons off and if they ding then they ding, that and the fact they're a real pain in the arse to use.
It's a 1st run FTi - Tour Issue he says.
