Driver shaft weight?

I ordered a grafalloy blue shaft for my driver. I believe it was a 65g shaft in extra stiff. Is this the normal weight that driver shafts are, or is it supposed to be in the 70's? I looked but only seen a couple that were 77g but the trajectory was high and I need a low trajectory shaft.

The grafalloy blue X stiff shaft is 63 gram whether it has .335" or 350" tip diameter, it has 2.8* torque, mid bend point and med/soft tip.

Shafts in general are manufactured in many different weights and different specs to suit different swings, different people. I don't know why do you think that a driver shaft should weight 70 gramms or so.

I hope this helps

Thanks for the clarification. I was told that my current shaft is too light for me and it 55g stiff flex so I thought that a 63g wouldn't make much difference besides the fact that I ordered extra stiff. Is the Grafalloy blue 63g extra stiff a big difference from a cobra ys 5.1 55g stiff?

I do not know the Cobra shaft so I can't compare it for you. However, without knowing why the 55 gram stiff shaft is not the right shaft for you it is hard to comment. Also, did the person say that you needed an extra stiff shaft? To my knowledge (I have not hit one but that is the general consensus from those I know and hit it) the Grafalloy blue S shaft plays stiffer than most shafts that are labeled stiff. As such the extra stiff is likely to play stiffer than most extra stiff shafts. If you know what I mean. In theory, you (we/all of us) should play the softer shaft that you can control to get maximum distance. If you are hitting your driver already past everyone then you only need to worry about getting the most control from any shaft.

Has your swing been checked on a launch monitor? That should give you a pretty good info to get fitted with the right club (loft and shaft), including shaft kick point, flex, etc.

Before you spend more money I would recommend that you put some lead tape (few gramms only) on the head of your driver to make it heavier. You can also add some lead tape close to the grip on the shaft. It will simulate a heavier shaft, so you will have a feel and get a concept how a heavier shaft might feel when you swing your driver. If you have a swing weight you can keep the current swing-weight of your driver by adding the correct amount of lead at the head and compensate it with a bit of tape near the grip. Just measure the swing-weight before and after you are adding the tape. When you finished testing just remove the tapes and no harm was done.

It may or may not fix your problem with the current driver. If it does then a heavier shaft will help you but it probably still should be a stiff flex. If it doesn't help then who knows. You may need a regular or extra stiff shaft, different shaft, different head (loft and/or brand), etc.

You could also see your local pro for help, if he is approachable.

Hope this helps

Most people see a dramatic increase in accuracy with a driver shaft heavier than 65g. The harder the swing and the stronger the player, the more this holds true. Shafts only started getting light when OEM's began the quest to make the longest driver. If you can keep the driver on plane and hit it straight with a lighter shaft then go for it. My testing has proven to me without a doubt than 90% of men are far better of with a driver shaft in the 75-85g range.
