Question GP New Decade MultiCompound problem

OK, over the weekend I regripped my own irons for the first time ever. And I have a problem.

These are the Mizuno MX-11s that I just got from SplooGe. They came to me with Winn grips on, so they had to go. I only did the PW thru 5 iron. I stripped off the old grips and tape, and applied 1 layer of 2" grip tape. The grips are marked R60 on the inside. The shafts should be the original R300 Dynalite Gold. I normally use regular size grips, as I have smallish hands (mens small glove).

The PW feels fine. The 9 thru 5 irons feel too skinny. When I swing them I sometimes lose control of the club.

Why are they too skinny when I used the same amount of tape and the same grip?

Can I blow the grips off, apply another layer of tape, and put them back on? Will they stretch that much?

Should I take them to somebody who actually knows WTF they are doing?

What did you have for old shafts and grips. Only thing that comes to mind is if they possibly use a smaller core grip on a shaft (EX. .58 grip on .6 core), it would make them larger.

Although more likely the case may be whoever did your old grips was to lazy to scrape off the old tape, in which case each layer would add to the thickness of the grip. Which was the case last time I had someone grip mine where I used to live. Three layers of tape would turn a standard grip into a midsized.

Or maybe you simply have thinner tape than what was used before. You can add several layers, I can only assume you could blow them off and back on from what I've heard, but I am yet to use the compressor method to know for sure.

In simpler terms, they may know exactly what they are doing, in being to lazy to peel off the tape. Which may serve as the best reason to do it yourself.

blowing off the multicompounds will most likely stretch out the botton "softer" part and could blow a whole in them too. i bet its what PA Jhawk says and the other grippers in the past were all too lazy to strip each club to steel.

Well, I can't play them as they are, so I'll have to try blowing them off. I use a cloth tube over the grip to prevent blowout, so I'll give it a whirl tonight.

DON"T try blowing them off if they are done with solvent and tape. the grips can explode. Get one of those solvent guns, and put a needle in the nozzle. inject the solvent throughout the grip to loosen it up. move the grip around as you are doing this to loosen it up, and they should slide right off after a while. i have done/tried this with numerous grips and the multis are very easy to do it with (relatively speaking), especially newly applied ones.

ill try to find a link explaining this more clearly...
edit: How to Remove and Save Grips | The Sand Trap
there's a few methods here. the one i outlined in the second one. note: you do not need a needle with a long hose like the one pictured in the link. they make small 1.5" needles.

- i have found that the multi compounds are very skinny , so i use the standard size with double tape.

I haven't had much luck removing the multi-compounds with air either - especially if they weren't installed with air

if you go the "inject solvent" route, be careful you don't poke yourself with the needle (sounds stupid, but that would be nasty)

Yeah, Doc. I was assuming you put these on with a compressor and no solvent. In which case, from watching Lyle's video it seemed like it would be no problem especially if they have not been on very long.

If you used solvent, I doubt you would want to use a compressor to remove them.

OK, I just finished redoing the PW thru 5 iron. This is what I did:

Shot 1cc mineral spirits into vent hole.
Slid cloth tube over grip.
Used air compressor to break adhesive grip, then the grips shot off like crap out of a goose.
Took off old tape, looked like 1 layer.
Cleaned shaft with mineral spirits and dried it.
Applied 3 layers of grip tape.
Lubricated tape and inside of grip and blew it back on.
Aligned the logo and set aside to dry.

Once I got the hang of it, it was pretty easy, but I don't think I want to try to make a living doing it.

The grips feel larger now and about right. I plan on trying them out tomorrow.

Why are you using grip tape and solvent if you are blowing the grips on?

Just use plain old masking tape and blow the grips on over top of that. I just dip the end in solvent to get them started. No need for 2 sided tape anymore.

Doc - I'm interested to hear what you think of those Dynalites. I've got the exact same shafts on my irons, and I love them.

Totally agree.

Part of the beauty of blowing grips on and off is not just less mess...but les expense as well.

Damn, I remember blowing on and off motorcycle grips 20 years ago...I can't believe people in the golf industry just started picking up on it.

The biggest benifit I see is with putter grips. No more "praying" when installing a putter grip on a double bend putter. "please be straight you SOB". LOL

Because I thought I was supposed to, dammit!

Plain old masking tape will work? The grips don't slip?

Cool!

Eracer, this is the first time I have had sticks with Dynalites in them. They seem quite nice. My previous sets have had Hogan Apex 4 steel, Hogan Apex 3 graphite, and Rifle 5.0 steel. These Dynalite R300 seem comparable to the Rifles.
