A Beginners Bag - What would you put in?

So specific clubs aside, I'm wondering what clubs would you fill a beginners bag with?

Would you take out the long irons and replace them with hybrids? If so which ones?

Multiple wedges with different lofts?

Classic or mallet putter? Standard, Belly, or long?

I'm just full of questions =)

First, I wouldn't worry about the 14 club rule...face it - you ain't gonna be playing in any tournaments.

1) I'd buy a used 3 metal with about a 14 or 15 degree loft - no less.

2) I'd buy two used hybrids, one 24 degrees and the other 28...go to a shop with a bin of used clubs and pick them out.

3) Irons: I'd go with 6,7,8,9, PW.

Get a simple putter that you feel most comfortable with by trying them at a golf retail shop. Buy something used and cheap.

At that point, you own nine clubs. Don't spend a dollar on more than that.

NOW - spend your damn money on getting LESSONS. I'd recommend a six lesson package spaced over six months.

Commit to practice, practice and more practice.

I have a good friend who did not pick up a club until he was 47. He is now 52 and has a solid 17 handicap.

He's spent a ton of time on the range. His driver is a beat up Cobra (good shaft) and his hybrid is a beat up TaylorMade.

Both clubs are fully functional though and I've told him to hold off on replacing them until he gets to the next level.

He's got a good short game. Focus on this....

I'd do like I did for my GF:

a set of cavity back graphite shafted irons 5-PW from GlobalGolf for $10.

lots of nice older iron sets on there for almost nothing.

Learn to hit the irons well before buying any hybrids or metalwoods, is my advice.

I always feel like doing the opposite, and buying a set of players blades off there from their $30 or less, then going off on my own onto the course on a slow day and seeing what I shoot with them...

I just checked and they have some old Walter Hagen or Ram blades that would give you all you want. $20 a set.

I tried playing a 1980 set of Hogan Apex II blades a while back and the 2 iron was not my friend. Now that I think of it, neither was the 3 iron. Or the 4 iron. The 5 iron was a bit stand-offish as well.

Tony Pennas?

Go ahead and try them. It's fun to try the old stuff sometimes. The 6 on down aren't that different. Usually the grips are old and dried out, though.

There are times I have hit the range with 16-17 clubs, I will hit a dozen balls each with several different clubs just to get a feel for them, distance, control or lack thereof, etc.

I have also taken a few extra out on the course with me, as you pointed out what's the big deal? If I ever played in any sort of tournament I would pull out the clubs I use the least....like my SW, absolutely never ever use that thing.

And why miss the 5 iron? Don't know about others but for some that club is my fail safe one, I can always hit it well for some reason.

It took me well over a year until I could hit a 5i anywhere near well enough to justify it being in my bag. For my first year playing I carried 25*, 28* and 31* hybrids and then 7 through to SW in 'proper' irons and it made a hell of a difference. Personally I've seen very few high-handicappers and beginners who can hit a 6i consistently, let alone a 5i.

I must be a freak then, I can hit regular irons well but those damn Hybrids have me perplexed. I can use them fine off the tee but trying a shot off the fairway is iffy at best & in the rough it's pretty much impossible for me.

5 irons forever!! Best club ever invented

I learned hitting irons first and never touched a wood for close to a month of hitting balls with irons. I think it helps in ballstriking and I still hit all the irons better than any other club in my bag. My favorite club is my 6 iron, I havent shanked it in what seems like forever.
