Is this acceptable?

As of late I've been doing a lot of club tinkering (well, onyl in theory.. the actual work is done by Dick's Sporting Goods) and I've hit some definite issues.

How acceptable is it to get a re-shafted driver back with a fairly significant amount of epoxt leaked out and stuck onto the head of the driver? I'm taking it back in today to have them clean it up, because I don't think it's my responsibility to do when I'm PAYING them to do the work for me. It's VERY unsightly, and not a minor droplet or anything. Probably a thumb-print sized blob.

The even MORE troublesome issue here, I need some validation on...

I was having my FT-3 reshafted with a Proforce Gold 65 (thanks Eracer!), and having the NVS (which must've been factory installed) put in. Apparently the hosel is unique on these, and when I gave it to the guy he said "Oiy these are a pain. It'll be done by tomorrow though."

So "tomorrow" came and went. I went in myself the day after it was supposed to be done (Friday) to pick up my club. The work was indeed done, the proforce was installed and such, but my NVS shaft was no where to be found. These are good guys working here, and I had places to be, so I left my number for them to call me. However, with the epoxy trouble and them losing my shaft, my faith in their ability as clubfitters and makers was starting to deteriorate...

I get a call this morning from the resident pro there. Apparently, while removing the NVS shaft, they damaged it beyond reasonable use.

Is ANY of this stuff acceptable? I'm going in there to have a talk with the guy who called me, who has become a pretty solid acquaintance of mine. I don't know what a justifiable demand is. Or if this happens frequently...

Let me know ASAP, fellas.

The epoxy thing is just plain lazy. Make them fix it.

Don't know what to tell you about the shaft. I would ask for a new NVS since they lost yours. OR AT LEAST store credit in the amount of a new NVS.

And don't return ever again.

Only a pro like Lyle/Indacup can tell you the answer as to whether the NVS could have been taken out ok,but I am sure there is always a risk when doing this work and equally I am sure even the best guys can accidently damage a shaft.

Guy at the range today took a shaft in and out of an FT5 in minutes

The epoxy is a joke, they have to fix that

The epoxy on the head, shaft, anywhere is totally unacceptable.

With clubs like the Cally's they should tell you up from that they may or may not be able to save the shaft. If they told you nothing then imo they owe you a shaft. Simple as that.

Yeah, epoxy is unacceptable. I wouldn't take a club back to someone who did that. It's a combination of not giving a $hit and not knowing what they are doing... equaling not someone I want working on my clubs.

As far as the NVS, I'd want the shaft back regardless. Ruined or not, I want it, I'll make that determination myself.

LOl. I didn't even think of that. If the guy had the opti fit deal it shouldn't have taken more than 20 seconds, nevermind 5 minutes.

Epoxy on the head is compelte unacceptable...I remember that being one of the very first things taught to me about basic clubmaking...care for the customers property.

One of the things he showed me was he sprayed silicone spray (WD-40) on a rag and wiped it all over the head and lower part of the shaft prior to reaking out the epoxy.

Because Epoxy won't stick to Silicone.

As far as the shaft goes, like Lyle said, unless they warned you about potential shaft damage, then they owe you a shaft of similar value, to your satisfaction.

For the record we DO warn customers when we do the newer Callaways.

I was not warned. I'll talk to the store manager. But as an update...

I took the club back to have the epoxy taken care of, and the actual pro was in (guy named Scott. Good fella.) He took a look at the job done on it and basically went "Holy sh*t."

The club head wasn't even flush against the ferrule that had been VERY epoxied on. Later I was walking back through the store, and my friend Jason who works there went "Holy crap man I saw your driver. what the hell did they do to that thing?"

So I think I'm certainly in the clear for a new shaft, after all this stuff has been going on. I'll probably see if I can get an NV instead of an NVS, since they cost the same there. Or just take the 87.99 in store credit.

Update:

Their general response was "there's never a guarantee that you'll get the shaft that was in it back."

And another update... The FT-3 head is separating from the ferrule, again. It's about 2 mm farther from it than it started (which was 1.5mm, because they couldn't get a f*cking ferrule to fit it). I'm THRILLED!

is it really unsightly, or is it just the principle of the thing?

as for not getting the shaft back, that is BS... if they arent gonna be able to save the shaft, they need to warn you, none of this "oh well theres never a guarantee"

do what ez said, ask them for the NVS back so you can make the judgement on whether it was ruined..

i can think of two things that might have happened... the guy got lazy and just hacksawed the shaft off and drilled the rest out.. or they took your shaft and sold it to someone else to put in their driver... either one of those are terrible buisness practices, and completely wrong..

if they refuse to give the NVS back for inspection, call them on it, and go ahead and make an accusation of the things i previously stated..

I think the time has passed for that plan to work, unfortunately

edit- to answer your other question, it is VERY unsightly, but now the head is actually SLIPPING off of the shaft. To the extent that, at some point, the head is going to fly off the club.

Chances are it's just the ferrule creeping up, not the head slipping down. If that were the case it would have already flown off. Try running the ferrule under hot water for 30 seconds and sliding it down. That should work if you get a good grip on it. In the future? Do your own. You are the engineer, right? This stuff should be childs play.

Yeah, all you need is a stove top, elbow grease, and a linolium floor.

Seriously, learn how to do it yourself and save yourself a pile of cash. If you going to club ho/shaft ho, you might as well do it yourself or you will be paying someone else for all your shaft changes. At least when you screw up your shaft that your pulling, you will know what happened and not wonder if someone else is abusing you as a customer.

Certainly something I will look into in the near future. What kind of an investment was it for all you guys to start doing your own clubwork? I mean, to buy the items and such
