Regripping with.........

AIR!

I got some new grips and I know I have some grip tape around here somewhere but I'll be damned if I can find it, got the solvent though.

I DO have a compressor and a beach ball filler fitting for the air nozzle so I gave it a try.

FECK ME!

SO EASY! And no mess! When I do find that tape I'm just going to throw it away.

Ok... More info needed!!! I have 14 new Winn Grips in the Garage, and tape and solvent......

But I also have a small compressor... I mean small, as in blow up the air mattress small, or blow up the kids inflatable pool small.

If I weren't rather new here, and knew any of you better, I would call my compressor "blow up X's Girlfriend Small."

But what is a "beach ball filler?" I am assuming it is a nozzle of some sort that can be placed over the small hole in the butt end of the grip, and force air into the grip? Eliminating the need for solvent?

Please share!!

Maybe I'm out to lunch here, but I think I remember that Winn grips are no good for this application.

Again, I don't know from first hand experience, only what I was reading.

Anyone have a clue here?

If anyone can explain this process, or lead me to a thread on this, I would appreciate it. I have a big a$$ air compressor in my garage, and this might make it worth having.

Every 'standard' air kit has one. I took a picture of it but my camera cable is shot.

It fits in the hole on the end of the grip and because the nozzle is tapered, it seals the hole.
I got the grip started on the shaft (just barely), blew the air in and slid the grip on....slightly mis aligned? no problem...more air and make the adjustment.

The whole thing took 10 minutes.

I take it as a given but just in case I'll mention it.....lock the shaft in a vice with the shaft protector on (you do not want to crush the shaft) and set square.

Cut away the old grip, get the new one started on and then blow compressed air into it, The grip expands just enough to slide it on and you're done.

I put grips on motorcycles the same way, works real slick.

I haven't had a need to regrip any clubs yet, but what holds the grip in place? On motorcycles I will use a small amount of a womens pump hairspray, it helps lubricate the grip if you don't use the air compressor & it dries fast & the grips never ever slip.

The rubber to steel friction seems to be enough although I just went right over the old tape.

Is there any "preferred" grip or is it merely a personal feel & opinion that differentiates them?

Winns can be blown on, they just are a pain in the ass to work with.

How much of a difference is there between standard length grips & the midsize? Should you put the same length grips on all clubs?

May be stupid questions, but I really want to know.
Thanks.

95% of all grips we put on are with air...Like Lyle, we'll try to remove as many good condition grips as we can..inject a bit of solvent in th butt end.. slip a protector over the grip and gradually apply air...if it's stubborn, we break out the knife and slice it off.

it took me all of 3 mins the regrip this dude's driver at work the old way.

that included cutting off the old winn that was on there as well as the tape.

don't see what the real hoopla about this technique is, old one works too good for me i guess.

The real benifit is that you take them off just as easy. When someone comes into my shop and wants to get their driver or irons regripped I can cut off one of their grips and put on a new for them to try. They dont like it I blow it off and put another one on. This takes seconds. Its also great for putter grips where allignment is critical. You do a double bend putter with tape and solvent you better get it right the first time.
