Cutting shafts down?

i'm really pushing hard to find a shaft for my precept but am not really finding a whole lot of anything that is either a decent length, decent weight, decent stiffness, all the while coming in .335 tip.

anything that i'd even consider buying seems to always be uncut 46" driver shafts.

my driver plays at 45.75"
my 14* heavenwood plays 43"
and i want the precept to play about 40.5-41"

say i was to pick up a 46" driver shaft for the sole purpose of putting it in my hybrid.....would cutting it down 6" kill the shaft and how it plays?

i am running all out of ideas guys.....even the idea of picking up a different hybrid head has crossed my mind several times and i've caught myself taking a peek at global golf's site to see if there was anything worth thinking of picking up.....any help would be greatly appreciated here.

thanks,
-YG

From ScoreGolf.com

There is tremendous difference in how a shaft will react if it is cut from the tip rather than the butt and vice-versa. Because the tip section is usually softer than the butt section, tip-cutting the shaft will make the shaft stiffer. If you butt-cut a shaft the flex will stay the same. If you are cutting for length only, you need to have your shaft, butt-cutted. If you’re looking to increase the stiffness of the shaft, you can have it tip-cut.

I seem to remember Lyle saying that butt-cutting a shaft will stiffen it. Hopefully he'll chime in and clear it up for both of us.

Seems to me that you would want to make sure you get a heavy driver shaft, since you will be removing about 13% of the weight of the shaft when you cut six inches off. So a 76g shaft will turn into a 67g shaft once it's cut. This will result in a low static weight, as well a a relatively low swingweight (relative to a purpose-built hybrid shaft), unless you weight the clubhead.

this is what i'm looking to put in.....same shaft as whats in my heavenwood. would go with the wood shaft in stiff.

||| Welcome to SK Fiber Golf - The Best Graphite Shafts Money Can Buy (but not priced like it!) |||

probably heavy enough.....i'm just worried about it being ridiculously stiff when i'm done cutting, seing as how its up there pretty good already.

butt trimming weakens the flex, tip trimming stiffenss it.. you would need the right combo of both..

I'm not sure butt trimming by itself weakens the flex, but when you add weight to the head to get back to your desired swingweight, it's going to weaken the flex

Lyle can correct me, but I think ~10 grams added to the head will drop the flex about 10 cpms or approximately one flex - what does your hybrid head weigh in comparison to a driver head?

It could just be cheaper and easier to hit ebay and buy a new hybrid with a shaft you like in it, just a thought

actually lookin like i'm going a more expensive way....

went to the repair shop where i originally got the first SK Fiber shaft from, and the guy there said i'd be fine cutting it down that much, so my shaft is decided.

while at the shop, they keep a minor collection of some clubs....i'm browsing through a barrel, and lo and behold i find a Heavenwood 4h 23* in great shape for $55. they're gonna hold it for me until pay day which is friday.

i hit a 4h heavenwood with the Reg. RCH shaft at work and was getting 230 easily. this club should fit perfectly in my distance gaps once i'm all done.

Driver- 290
heavenwood 1h- 265
heavenwood 4h-230
3i- 210

thanks for all the help guys, hopefully the guy was right and this shaft plays alright still, if not, at least i'll have a .350 hybrid to expand my choices if it fails....

i may have just done a whole lot of nothing or i may have just saved some $ and got exactly what i wanted.

i own both the 18* and 21* versions of the 2-EZ.

the 21* was originally 40 3/4" and the 18* was 3/4 of an inch longer than that.

i asked precept what the specs on the shaft were and was told it was 90grams with 3.0* of torque. since the 18* head was beat up and i wasn't using it, I pulled its shaft as well as the 21*'s shaft, tipped the shaft from the 18* the length of the difference between the two and stuck it in the 21* head.....hopefully i now have a much stiffer combo that won't balloon on me.

here's to hoping! if it doesn't work out i'll still end up getting another SK Fiber and throw in there.....no heavenwood for me, at least so far.
