Pings are going bye bye

I've found my problem. Last year I replaced my old, ugly Cleveland VAS 792 irons with Ping G5's. Got a hole-in-one my first week with them. Since then my scores have ballooned and I couldn't figure out why. It's these frickin "custom fitted" G5's! It has to be. I hit some shots with my old Clevelands last Sunday (played with son-in-law who I gave them to) and they felt like a part of me. DAMN!!

This winter I am going to have zaphod build me a set of Maltby MTF's with Project X Rifles in them. Other then my beloved Redwood Anser putter Pings are now on my sh*t list!!

At last! Warbirdlover leaves The Dark Side!

Just a suggestion, but if I were getting new irons, I would consider the Wishon 560MC in the component line and the Mizuno MX (any model).

And get the darn shafts custom fitted!!! I have heard on another board that Mizuno quality control is not very good lately, so specs should be checked on any being bought. I would highly recommend you go see Dana Upshaw before buying any new sticks.

Didn't take playing them to put them on my SH** list. Just the company's practices in reference to US Servicemen and the dealers that try and cut them a break. But not wanting to start that up again.

Pings always seemed "unfinished" in the look of the club to me. Definitely go with what works for you. I always thought the very early Clevelands were unique looking especially the VAS. I have a VAS 1 iron laying around here just because it looks cool.

They are worlds apart from your G5's and your Cleveland VAS's have you demo'd them? Maybe a demo of them and some Mizzy MX's first would be a good idea?

I can't say the Pings are bad for everyone. sssmokin is doing great with them. There is just something "wrong" for my swing. (Couldn't be my swing )

I thought about the Wishon's but I think they cost a lot more then the Maltby's. Hope Lyle chimes in with some comments....

And I'll be "demoing" some before buying.

After playing with and talking to zaphod a couple weeks ago and reading all the comments in here on it I've become a believer in spining. I can't see buying OEM clubs and then having to re-shaft them because the OEM's don't spine. Mizzies included. And I just don't want Mizzies.

I'd be curious as to "why" the G5s aren't working for you. You, as much as anyone, know that PINGS are not for everyone. They tend to have more offset and bounce than a lot of the other sets that are out there. My miss is a fat shot so the fact that they have more bounce than your average club is a good thing. If your miss is a thin shot then I would think the bounce would be disastrous!

I hate to see you leave PING but, as you told me when I came into the light, you use whatever the hell works!

G5's have a wide sole. I think it's TOO wide for me and I hit them thin all the time. I didn't have that happen often with the old Clevelands. I'm finding that "game improvement" irons may not always work as well for everyone as something with less sole width, offset etc.

That is exactly what I was hinting at. There's an easy fix for that though... it's called the i10. Less bounce than the G5 and a little less offset (as well as overall smaller profile) than the i5.

I agree the i5's would be better but too expensive for me now. Here's the first set of irons I had years ago and learned on. Yikes!!

Holy smokes. I leanred on Callaway Big Berthas. I probably would've quit the game had those been my first clubs. Hell, I came close to quiting this year when I had the Nike Pro Combo Tours (which are probably 100 times more forgiving)!
