Shaft length question (Another one....sorry)

OK, this question could quite easily make me look like the doofiest guy on this board but I need confirmation (Not of being the doofiest guy either).

If I buy a shaft at 44" and insert it into my Titleist bore-thru head the whole club will play at 44", correct?

If this is the case how much can you butt-extend a club before it becomes ridiculous and unusable? Would an inch and a half be too much to butt-extend a shaft and what would happen to it if I did?

You need to be careful with extensions, I usually will not extend a club more than .75" so that the top hand isn't holding on to the extension by itself, this increases the risk of failure of the extension.

I have never had a problem with an extension as long as it was 1.5 inches or shorter. In order to work though, the extesion must be the right size for the shaft and fit tightly. Any play in it when dry fit and it will fail for sure.

As for the length. A raw shaft of 44 inches will play about 41.5 in a borethough head. Meaning with a 1.5 inch extension you would still only have a driver that measures 43 inches.

Well how do you like that, I am the doofiest guy on the board after all.

OK I'll work with the numbers that I own and hopefully I'll understand a little better.

My current 905 S plays at 45" from the top of the grip to base-heel of club.
This means that the length of the shaft I currently have in there would be ??????
45 inches???
Or do you not have to insert the shaft all the way to the bottom of the club?

Basically all i'm looking for is an answer to what is the shortest shaft I can buy that will play to 45" in a bore-thru Titty. And that will then determine how much extension I would need if I were to buy anything shorter than said length....

Ouch my brain

Sorry guys. And thanks too.

Haha, I need to stop posting when I am deathly ill with the flu.
Yes, it would play close to 44 inches when finished, not 41.5 as I stated.

Will reply to PM's today as I finally feel alive enough to read for more than 1 minute.

I agree I broke a Proforce shaft that had a 2" extension once and have had extensions pull out a few times. Its hard to get the extension really snug fit with some shafts (ultralites especially) if they have a big inner diameter.

Have you considered blind boring the head by 1 inch and leaving the shaft as is?

OK so if i understand correctly the entirety of the shaft must be inserted to the bottom of the club.

So whatever the shaft length is, is what the club will play in total length?

From what I've been told, the shaft (if 44' long) will go 2' through on that club. You measure from the bottom of the face to the butt of the shaft. So that one would probably play around say....43.5 to 43.25.

On a standard club that doesn't bore through, you actually gain a little length. I know on my drivers I cut the shaft to 44' - 43.5 and they play 45-45.5.

I may be totally off on that though, I've just been doing the clubmaking thing for around 4-5 months.
