Wedge Overload

I'm in the market for a wedge, or two, so yesterday I stopped by the local Golfsmith to swing a few different models. I think I spent most of my time with the Clevelands and thats just because there are so many to try. There are some good deals to be had on the CG10s and 11s now that the 14 is out. Honestly there really wasn't a Cleveland I didn't like.
I also got my hands on Ping, Snakeyes, Mizuno, and Titleist. After more than 2 hours of demoing and discussion I had to leave. I was so overloaded with info that I really couldn't think clearly.
I'm really leaning towards the Clevelands with the Mizuno a close second, but one club that surprised me, maybe it was just fatigue, was the Snake Eyes. I hadn't even considered these as an option, but they had a really good feel and I hit the ball quite well. After a little digging I found they have a good reputation, but it seems they have no resale value. I guess they're invaluable if you hit them well.

If you're looking for a Mizuno MP-R 56/10, let me know...or a TM rac chrome 48º PW for that matter.

Wedges are tough to choose. It takes some time to figure out what works for your game. For me that was compounded also by poor technique. Once I got a lesson and started hitting my wedges "correctly" I gained about 30yds. on my SW distance. Before that I thought I had this huge gap when I really didn't.

Picking one comes down to a few factors for me. Appearance, the wedge has to look good to me and inspire confidence, they are my workhorses and they'll be around for a while so I gotta like it right off the bat. Loft, the loft has to fit into my setup and have a reasonable gap from and to my next club. Bounce and grind, these 2 go hand in hand for me. I have a dig/drive type wedge swing/attack angle and take big divots. I like a little more bounce in a wedge, a blunt leading edge and a pretty flat/square setup. For instance if you look at a Mizuno wedge, they are rounded and a Vokey is flat. The Mizuno is a "cambered sole".

Sorry to throw all this at you and probably add confusion. If you have any questions I should be able to help you a bit. I've asked many, many questions myself and it's how I learned more. Scratch Golf has a very interesting sort of "bounce/grind fitting" on their site. I found that helpful in getting a general idea of what sort of wedge would work better or not as well for me.

Snake Eyes makes some damn fine wedges and they can be had fairly inexpensively; especially if you build them up yourself. I wouldn't worry too much about resale value unless you don't plan on having them around that long and, even then, resale value on wedges isn't all that great to begin with.

Ez hit the nail on the head with how different all the wedges can be. I went through several myself (brand, type, loft, bounce, etc.) before finally finding what fit me the best. Good luck and happy ho'ing!
