Come Talk

Ok so I went to a great club fitter and golf teacher by my house. He has a shop down in Oakmont, bout 20 minutes from me. The shop sells KGB clubs that can be custom fit. How are these? He didnt push them at all, he said he likes em but he also uses OEM clubs. It is all preference. He said he will fit whatever clubs I buy or bring him.

Also he works with a shaft fitting program. It reccomended I use a Stulz shaft in my driver. I was skeptical because I had never used it or heard of it. I hit a driver he had with that shaft in it, and it felt fricking amazing. It has a triangle insert in the cent of the shaft. Has anyone ever hit these or dealt with them? That last question was mostly pointed at Lyle.

What do you guys think of all of this? Only thing is I dont want the stulz in my Cally X460 cause it is Bore-Through and if I wanna reuse the shaft I wont be able to cause Cally and their dumb borethroughs will break my shaft.

So in essence has anyone ever hit a Stulz shaft or played with KGB irons?

search button is up towards the right ya know....

that said, the clubs are KZG's, not KGB's (KGB was the USSR's version of the CIA) - KZG's are nice clubs but are only sold through local fitters - I think they have a policy against internet sales

off hand, I think Indacup has KZG's in his bag but plenty of others do to

regarding the shaft, I've hit the Tri shaft before but had horrible results - if it fits your swing and you don't mind the look, go for it. shaft fitting is all about finding the one that works for you

not understanding your issue with the bore-through - if you install a shaft in a bore-thru, then decide to use it in another club, you just need to trim the tip a bit and it'll work just fine in a regular hosel

See this is why I post on here, I am dumb about golf stuff yet other people are oh so smart. Yeh I thought KGB sounded wrong. I was hitting a few of them and they were pretty nice irons.

Now for a tricky question. I have a driver swing speed of 105m.p.h.
Why would I need regular flex iron shafts? I bet Lyle and Rick along with a few others could answer this.

Insert isnt the biggest but I liked the shaft. I am either gonna get this, the Graf Blue, or the UST V2. Not sure which one yet. Looking for a cheap 905r head to stick it in.

not tricky at all - you swing irons differently than you do your driver

they say you should probably play the softest flex irons you can control
If you're on the bubble between Reg and Stiff, which is sounds like you probably are, (I'm there myself) you will get softer feel and more distance out of Reg flex shafts and perhaps slightly tighter dispersion and harsher feel with stiff shafts

I'm playing Reg flex shafts tipped extra to play between Reg and Stiff - kinda "firm" - this way, if I swing at a nice controlled 75-80%, i'm not punished with distance loss or harsh feel

the 905r with a V2 in it shouldn't be too hard to find...of course, you could always just go with the fitter's recommendation if he's a good fitter - why leave it up to chance

Doc had a Titleist that had a butt frequency like a noodle not too long ago - if you have one built, you take those variables out and know the actual loft of the head and flex of the shaft

2 follow up comments - 1) I'm not anywhere near Lyle when it comes to golf equipment and really can't be put in his group and 2) read Wishon's book
Amazon.com: The Search for the Perfect Golf Club: Books: Tom W. Wishon,Tom Grundner
it'll answer alot of your questions and help you spend your golf budget wisely

Yeh I just want the head. As long as the head is in good shape and it is 10.5 loft. I will be good to go. I am gonna have the shaft pulled and the club reshafted, re-gripped, and re-measured by this fitter. I like the look of those irons also.

Also this is the place I was at earlier tonite. Aaron is a real nice guy. Beast of a driver also.

Outside of what Rick mentioned and kinda touched on in a sense, if you have a really smooth or slow tempo and transition, you will many times use iron shafts with less flex. I actually see this alot. In the same sense, if you have a faster tempo or transition, the opposite may apply. Which is kinda the case with me. Up until this year, I have always had a very quick tempo and transition out of my backswing. It was probably more in the sense a swing flaw than a swing tempo. So although when I picked up my irons, my speed is kinda borderline between 5.0 and 5.5, and I could likely play either shaft, I side towards a stiffer shaft to help with control because of my tempo. This is the first year I have truly managed to maintain a nice tempo for a good period of time, but it came at the expense of sacrificing speed and distance initially. In the 4-5 months that I spent working on this, my speed and distance dropped of quite a bit, although it is coming back around now that I am becoming more comfortable with the swing. So although at the beginning of the year when my speed was around 103 mph, I probably could have even fit into an x-stiff on my woods because of what I viewed as a "Choppy" tempo at times. On video, you could see some really funky bending on the shafts. I dropped it all the way down under 90mph several months ago to gain control, although it is now back up around 95mph and rising as I get used to this new swing and tempo. I figure it will eventually be back up in that range and the shafts I have should fit nicely anywhere between what it is now, and even what it used to be speed wise with the smoother tempo. If it never gets back to 130 mph, I am happy with the control over distance and simply taking about 1-2 clubs more.

Although since I take most of the winter off because of the weather, I kinda know that if my swing is flawed in the beginning of the year, it will likely be because it is on the quick side.

edit 1 - ... and again, the Wishon Book that Rick linked does a great job explaining all of this information.

You and Rick are both correct. It is also because I am short. The shorter the club shaft the harder it is to bend. Therefore I swing fast but if I was taller I would be in the stiff range but I use shorter clubs.
