combo question

im getting new irons one of these days and im wondering if getting a cb/mb set is better then a straight mb set. is there any benifits of ether or is this just another personal preferince thing. the set would be 4-6 cb and 7-pw mb just wondering.

the advantage is forgiveness of cavity backs in the clubs where you need it the most

a straight set of MB's looks great, but I don't have the game for it

I think a combo set is a good way to go. I think the main advantage of CB's in the longer irons is the lower centre of gravity you can get with CB's allows you to get it up in the air a bit easier. The extra forgiveness is a help too but the most important thing with the long irons is to get a higher ball flight.

I think most people would benefit from a slightly softer shaft in the longer irons too. When I used to use DG's I used to put R300's in the 3 and 4 and S300's in the rest. I now use Nippon's and found that I can handle the stiff in all the irons. Trigold shafts use the same concept, with the shorter iron shafts being heavier and stiffer than the longer clubs even thogh they are all rated S.

Those Nippons are great shafts. They do play soft to flex. My hybrids are stiffs, and I've got regulars in my irons. Seem to match up perfectly.

I love combo sets. It makes it so much easier to create a shot with the short irons, but you still have forgiveness where you need it.

I agree with the overall concensus here in the fact I would go with a combo set. If you want a sexy bag, get striaght MBs. If you want to have more consistency and lower score, get the combo.

I've found the Nippons o be a perfect shaft for me. They are a bit lighter than DG's and have a lower kick point (they seem to me to anyway but Lyle could confirm this) so I get a high ball flight, but still penetrating, but are still solid through impact and don't hook. They are like having the best aspects of DG stiff and regs combined in one shaft.
