Major Golf Stores

Has anyone else had this experiance with the big name golf stores. In my case it was Edwin Watts. I went in there with the intention of getting some over length clubs, because I'm 6'2". But the salesman keeps telling me that what I need is a set of HiBore irons, standard length. So being the sucker I am, I take his advice and buy them. They never felt right, I felt I was bent over too far. Anyway, they have since been replaced with my beloved Srixon i 506 forged irons. But the instructor I'm taking lessons from also fits clubs, so I asked him to see how close these were. Using the Ping measuring system, tape and the plastic board and various length 6 irons he informs me I need 1 full inch over length, and 2* upright and a mid size grip. If I didn't need to sell the HiBore set to recoup some of my ho'ing I've been doing I'd take them back to Edwin Watts and wrap them around that salesman's neck.

BTW, the proper fit 6 irons felt great, I was hitting the prettiest mid iron shots of my life. And when I dropped off my clubs to get the iron's shafts extended, and all my clubs re-gripped I found a Callaway Warbird 3hybrid for dirt cheap I was crushing off the mat so suprise suprise, it's going in the bag with a new mid size grip also. A ho's work is never done is it?

Most of those guys in the big box stores don't have a friggen clue.

I was in Nevada Bob's once (I loathe that place) and overheard a guy telling an old guy that he needed a heavier shaft to increase his control in his driver and suggested he go to steel. He then left the old bugger hitting shots into the simulator and went to sell some shoes and perhaps a 1977 Monte Carlo.

I wandered over and watched the guy struggle to hit this steel shafted TM580 and suggested that he go to a Big Bertha 11* with a regular flex shaft. The guy started pumping balls out to 225-230, where he was hitting 170 yard worm burners straight right before with the steel shafted driver.

He thanked me, and I told him to go to the smaller, privately owned shop and that "I" sent him there. I later learned that the guy not only bought the driver that I suggested, but also got fitted for Bertha Irons and has become a regular there.

Not that i'm a champion fitter by any means, but I can see an idiot leading the blind from a ways away. And, that guy probably would have been conned into that shitty driver had someone not intervened.

What a tool that useless f*ck was.

Not that I am going to endorse your experience or treatment, but I think that it is important to at least try to put some perspective on it. I don't know if the Edwin Watts salesperson works on commission or not, but either way his job is to sell you something. Especially if it is something they have in stock right there and need to move. At least a small part of the blame has to go on you, because you allowed him to sell it to you. Even more especially if you thought you needed or wanted longer clubs, why would you let yourself get talked into buying something else?

Not to belabor the point here, but why did you buy them if that wasn't what you wanted?

I hope you don't feel like I'm attacking you or anything, and I think that we've all fallen for it at some time or another. The important thing is to learn from the experience, and I hope that you've learned not to let yourself be sold into buying something you don't want. It's an important skill to learn on something small like a set of golf clubs, so that when you buy something really big and expensive like a car, you don't fall for it again. Research beforehand so you know exactly what you want, and don't be afraid to leave empty handed. There are other golf shops out there if the one you are dealing with won't get you what you want, especially with the Internet today.

Worse yet...I read every Internet golf forum known to mankind. And live in the golf capital of the world. And work in the golf industry. And see ya'll tourists with your clubs in person.

Yes, Rockford...don't have a clue. Nice language!

If you read the first line of my rant, you'll see that I've clearly indicated that "most guys" don't have a clue.

From the highlights of your resume there, it seems that you're in the minority, unfortunately.

But kudos for sticking up for the big box guy. They always get reamed out for no reason.

As an admin, I'm sure you know everything.

No worries, eh? We'll only charge you double. And from the back tees? That guy that picks the range that you tried to hit...won't care.

Until you bring your wallet, that is.

Wait a minute! I live in the golf capital of the world and I have never met anyone named GoodDay!

What is this other so-called golf capital? Myrtle Beach? Pshaw! That's where we went on spring break when we were in high school!

Orlando? Pffft! Mickey Mouse!

St. Andrews? Old hat!

Only one spot on Planet Earth was fine enough for the only Grand Slam winner in golf history.

At least until Eldrick wins them all.

Nope, never claimed to know everything. Never will.

But I can tell when someone is pissing up a rope.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion from their experiences. There's no denying that.

If you feel otherwise, I have no qualms with that.

You bragged about being on the range and hitting the range picker when he thought he was out of your range, eh?

I guess so.

I also ate a ham sandwich once.

What has that got to do with Nevada Bob's and their inept help?

Thank you, Maestro. Whatever that means.

How long until we all get into it about fist fights and how tough we are? I can't wait.

If anyone wants to "barge in" and talk about Big Box Stores, now would be the time.

You get what they pay for. How much do expect a kid to know who makes $7.65/hr.? That's why I send my major stuff out to Ken. Even "Golfer's Warhouse", which has full service club repair, decent store, has fecked up stuff on Twofast and I. Ferrules sliding up on clubs and Vsteel head that flew off into the range. How do you not realize a .335 is not going to stay on a .350 head with no shim? I started doing my own after that and aside from
"pain in the nuts" Epic, haven't had a problem.

Wow, I didn't intend to start a argument. And I left out of my post, this wasn't a kid, but a gentleman in his late 40's to early fifties who professed to KNOW what he was talking about. The manager if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure some of the people that work in the big box stores do know their stuff, and would go out of their way to properly fit a customer. My beef was that I walked in knowing I needed longer clubs, and was talked out of it by a man I was led to believe knew what he was talking about.

According to the Ping Fitting System you would fall between +1/4" to +1/2" based on your height alone. Of course the Ping Fitting Chart is only suppose to act as a starting point, but I wouldn't blame the person for not suggesting +1" (at least +1/4" should have been experimented with).

It sounds like the original guy didn't fit you properly, but like a few have already mentioned, just because somebody works at a store like that doesn't mean they're a club maker, and they're most likely not getting paid too much.
