Tipping/Trimming New Shaft Question

I'm about to have a UST V2 HL shaft .335" installed into a new driver head (pics are coming soon!). I picked it up in Regular flex because I thought it would go into a bore-through Titleist. However, now it is going into a Cleveland. The shaft is brand new and right now measures about 47" raw length. I want it to play at 45" and I want it to play Firm (between Stiff and Regular).

1 - How much does tipping the shaft change flex in 1/4" increments?

2 - Any suggestions for how much I should take from the tip and how much from the butt to maintain a Firm flex and its swingweight.

3 - What if I played it at 44.5"? How much would this change #2?

Thank you much. We only have one club builder in town and I don't entirely trust his judgement on some things yet. He can do the work, but I think that is it.

There is no way to tell exactly how much tip trim will effect a shaft without a frequency machine. Different shafts react differently to being tip trimmed than others, some shafts actually can play softer if tip trimmed.
The general rule of thumb is that every inch of tip trim will equate to roughly 10 cpms. Shortening a driver from the butt end will usually result in an increase of 4 cpms per inch. This is all with not additional weight added to the head.

Based on my experience with that shaft to get your combo to play to a firm flex at 44.5 inches I would:

- tip trim it 3/4 of an inch
- add 6g of weight to the head
- assemble
- butt cut to finished length of 44.25
- install grip (this will take you to 44.5

This should keep the swing weight where you had it at 45, and play to a firm flex with that shaft.

I knew I could count on you. For what it is worth the head is a Hibore XL which is supposed to play at a D-5 SW from the factory. I don't know at what length or with which grip that would be though.

Bames,

after you pull the shaft, weigh the head, the raw shaft, and the grip for me.
I can then tell you exactly how much weight to add to the head.

Thanks LyleG. The shaft is actually brand new. Weighed the head and it comes in at 200g. The grip is a Sharpro Dual Compound standard at 51g. The shaft is the UST V2 HL shaft which measures 46" and I have yet to go weigh it. On the shaft it says 64g.

Is this enough? Thanks again,

Bames

Bames,

Ok, with that info this is what you will get

At 44.5 inches, trimmed the way I said, you need to add a 5g tip weight, and the club will play finished at D2 swingweight. Should be perfect imo.
