Sad, very sad

Saturday, while waiting on my SUV to be serviced, I strolled through the new Dicks at the mall.

No golf balls on sale.

Golf shoes were "on sale" but still too pricey for what they were.

All iron sets (except two) were butt ugly shovels.
Not a single true blade to be seen, well, OK.
I expect Callaways to have a thick topline with loads of offset, but why oh why does Cobra look that way as well? Yech! And the MX model Mizunos are just as bad. No MP models on display.
Oh, and while we are at it, why does Dicks sport the aforementioned shovels only in Stiff S300 ? So we can send our divots miles down the fairways?

I only saw 2 iron sets that I would have put in my bag:
Callaway Fusions, not the widesole.
And the winner by a mile in the looks department:
Adams Golf

It really is sad, especially the S300 part, 95% of golfers have no where near the swing speed required to effectively load and play a Dynamic Gold S300 shaft. The big name golf manufacturers really seem to spinning in circles lately, especially with iron design. Golf store seem to bore me to tears now a days.

At 56 years, I think I'm doing well to swing a tip soft Dynalite R300. Most of the guys I saw in the golf dept were my age or older. Maybe they were all retired pros.

One of the guys I practice with sometimes played junior golf with CHIII. Has a beautiful swing and plays a 8 year old set of Maxfli Rev red-dots with S300 shafts. Hits high draws and fades that just seem to hang in the air. Every shot was 20 to 50 yards by me. Sniff.

What do you mean about the S300 part. I have been playing first S400's and then S300 SL's for about 3 yrs now. Before that it was the Hogan Apex 3 shaft, which I loved. I have been considering going down to R300's just for the feel of them, or maybe rifle 5.5's but would be interested in your opinion, not necessarily for me, but in general.

I think that's because the "Cobra" blades and such say Titleist on the back.

They are nice looking sticks... they remind me for some reason of the original Nike Pro Combo irons that I used to have, which were sweet by the way. I looked at them at Dick's and like you they were one of 2 sets (Cally X-Forged) that I would put in my bag. Neither set though would knock my Hogan's out though.

I basically have given up on buying any new irons that OEM's have released, they just dont look nice at all...

The main "buyers" for Dick's are total idiots and certainly don't have a clue on golf. All you have to do is look at the shaft selections on the drivers. And the last years TaylorMade Tour Red and Blacks are still on sale for $29/doz. Good deal.

Dynamic gold shafts play stiff to flex. To properly load a dynamic gold S300 shaft, with a medium tempo, and a mid release, you need a 5 iron swing speed of roughly 90 mph. Even the R300's are too much for the majority of golfers, as they need a 5 iron swing speed of about 80 mph to load fully.
Most normal players would be far better of playing a shaft that is lighter (about 105g is optimal from what I see doing fittings) softer in the tip, and generally softer overall. The TTDG shafts are a very good shaft, they are just too stiff for the majority of amateur players.

Which is exactly why my Dynalite Gold R300's fit me. I could stand for them to be tip-trimmed 1/4" or so, but overall, they are perfect for my 48-yo smooth-tempo swing.

And Doc, I know what you mean. Although I must say - the new Edwin Watts store that opened up near me has a pretty nice selection of iron sets, including some MacGregor MT Mids that I'm going to demo. They have Nippon NS950 Pro shafts in stiff flex (which is what I have - and like - in my hybids). I would like to see them in reg. flex.

OTOH, most of the sets they display have S300's. No doubt to soothe the egos of the middle-aged hackers like us who shop there.

Don't most of these places keep their stock elsewhere, like in another room? Just ask for a set in R-flex.
