Just bought a set of MacGregor MT irons. Standard Nippon NS950GH shafts. I've been pretty happy with my set of Tommy Armours, but I know that club technology has improved since they were discontinued in 2000, and frankly, I was looking for a bit more forgiveness. These MT's are game-improvement irons that don't look (or feel) like shovels. Forged stainless steel, cup face for forgiveness, cut channel to help increase launch angle, and slightly stronger lofts to add some distance.
I hit 10 shots with my Armour 6-iron on a simulator, and got the results I expected. About 165 yards average, with about 15 yards dispersion. Then I hit the MT's, and yardage jumped up to 175 yards, with about 3-degrees higher launch angle. Dispersion was much better. I loved the feel of the forged heads with the Nippon shaft.
I also tried the Nippon shaft in R-flex, and the S-flex is better for me. I also hit the Wilson Ci7 with the OEM S-flex shaft. To be honest, I liked the Ci7 a lot. But the MT had slightly better feel, and better dispersion numbers.
Full report next week after I play a round with them. I'm very optimistic that these irons will be an improvement over my current irons.
Here's some pics of the MT and Armour 6-irons.
