Grip Installation.

Can I put grips on with an air compressor or do I actually have to use the tape and solevent to put them on.

Air compressor is much quicker. I use plain old masking tape, and a little soapy water on the end of the grip to help get it on the shaft.

Sweet, when I did it before I used the solevent and tape, but I just bought some Winn's for my woods and wedge because all the grips on my irons are new because my irons are still new.

Depending which Winn grips you have you may have trouble blowing them on. Most of their grips are quite stiff and don't expand real well when blown on. Regular rubber and composite grips are much easier to blow on most of the time.

I wouldnt install a WINN grip any other way that with air. They are awful to install using solvent. All their grips are POS anyway imo.

I'm not a big fan of Winn grips either but for some unknown reason I get along really well with one of their putter grips.

It's funny how two different people have different experiences with clubmaking and repair stuff. I just put two Winn putter grips on tonight with solvent and tape. Both .580 core grips on .600 butt shafts, slipped right on and straight as an arrow. Couldn't have taken more than two seconds for the whole process plus a few seconds to sight align and tweak the alignment a bit.

I think it's funny how ONE person has different experiences with clubmaking and repair stuff. especially when they're doing the same thing over and over again

getting grip tape off for example - you go through 6 irons in a set in record time then the 7th one takes you as long as the first 6...

So true...

The putters I put together tonight were a little side project for fun. I decided to use a couple old TaylorMade hybrid shafts. They still had the grips on them so I had to strip them off. Of course they were put on with tape and solvent at the factory. The first one the tape just peeled right off almost in one piece and almost no residue. The second one must have been put on with monkey snot and it was obvious it was going to be a pain. Thankfully I remembered I bought a new heat gun a few weeks ago so it was a good chance to try it out. I cut a slit lengthwise down the tape and hit it for about 30 seconds with the heat gun on low heat. Voila! The tape peeled off in one giant piece. A little cleanup with Goo Gone and the shaft was good to go.

I know one thing for sure, if I had a shop and did a bazillion grips there is no way I'd use anything but air.

The only grips I will not put on with air are the golf pride multi compounds. These overpriced cheap pieces of crap get giant (think tennis ball) air bubbles in an instant and never fit properly after an air install. Why anyone chooses the GP multi's over the Sharpro ones is beyond me.

Not to threadjack, but what type of heat gun did you buy? I have been looking for one over the last week or so, just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Also, if your going to use the air compressor make sure you PAY ATTENTION. I was taking a grip off and got distracted, I think my wife yelled to me. Next thing I know, POW!!!, the damn grip popped and my ears were ringing LOL.

I have 3 or 4 different heat guns now, a couple are specific to my work (electronics). The one is recently bought for general shop and clubmaking use is this one:

Harbor Freight Tools - 1500W Dual Temperature Heat Gun

This one is also good:

Harbor Freight Tools - Dual Temperature Heat Gun

And here's the accesory kit -- I use the little concentrator for pulling club heads on the high temp setting:

Harbor Freight Tools - Heat Gun Accessory Kit

As it turns out it's a really nice heat gun. I also got the accesory kit. I picked them both up on sale. The heat gun cost $9.99 and the accessory kit cost $6.99.

Harbor Freight Tools is a great source for tools on the cheap. The quality isn't always as good as professional level tools (I have plenty of them too) but I've always found them workable and affordable. If you are careful, you can save a lot of money on a lot of the little things that fill your shop and nickel and dime you to death. Once you buy from them you'll get sales flyers all the time in the mail. Buy from their sales, you can usually get about 30-50% off their regular price.

We also have one of their stores locally so I can often go in and just pickup the stuff I want when it's on sale.
