Drivers

I cannot seem to find a combo that gets my launch angle where I need it to be, so I am looking for a head that is in the 350 to 400cc range I can put some different shafts in. Can someone turn me onto a component head or even an oem head that is in that smaller range?? I can't seem to really come up with anything, I am hitting the r7 425 cause I don't like the big 460 heads, but I can't get my launch angle where it needs to be without weighting the hell outta the back of the r7. I have tried a couple different shafts but want a head I can put some different ones in and still have the r7 together in case I need it.

Is the ct250 head 460cc???

Jason,

I have 5 drivers. It can be "released" at any time.

It should be here this aft, I'll post some pictures for you and you can make a decision on whether or not to pursue it.

My take on the 380cc version is that it's the longest of all the NP series heads. Not as forgiving, obviously, but head and shoulders the distance bread winner.

This is exactly why I bought it. To relive the days of smoking my Big Bertha Warbird.

Are you trying to get your launch higher or lower?

If its higher you have a few things working against you. Smaller heads have centers of gravity more designed to keep the ball lower. Secondly, your current shaft is quite stiff tipped and probably not contributing at all to your launch angle.

Jason,

I have a Maltby CT250FC 10.5° on a stiff EI-70 that you can try out if you like. We can meet somewhere for a round of golf like we did last year.

This is a wonderful stick that Dana Upshaw made for me when I was having a serious case of the no-go-straights, so I had him make it at 43.5". Obviously that can be changed. I do think this is a 460cc head, but it doesn't look that big.

I can also bring my 983K 9.5° if you want to hit it, but I don't want to sell it.

as lyle said, if you are attempting to get your ball flight up, then a smaller head would NOT be the right option.

Lyle,

My launch angle is currently around 11*. I have what I call a "steep" swing, I hit more down on the ball. I don't really take a big divot but still hit down on the ball, which with my irons is great. My iron flight is boring and ball sticks. But the translation to a driver creates a low launch angle and ball flight. I am only about 10 yards shorter than most guys I play with but most of it is roll since I hit the ball low and it just runs. Like I said I have to put like 14 grams weights in the back ports of the r7 to get the ball flight up where it is reasonablle. I have tried some of the bigger drivers but just can't get comfortable with the size. I tend to hit them all over the face, I have found with the smaller head I have more control and hit the ball solid. Maybe that is all in my head. Should I go back to a Regular shaft that plays a little softer??

Jason

Drop me a pm, I would like to come down and play sometime, I need the exercise to.

I would like to hit the maltby, it may help me out a little.

Jason,

What loft is the R7? The first thing I would look at is a driver head with more loft, something about 12*, couple that with a softer tip, low bend point shaft. Even with a downward angle of attack this should get your launch angle up about 13-14*.
If you want to keep the R7, then there is nothing wrong with having weight on the ass end of that R7. I would look at a new shaft however. Definitely go with a soft tip, low bend shaft. This should get your launch angle up about 2* from where it is currently.

If you are looking for component I would try one of these . They are all on the smaller side and can be hand picked for loft and face angle.

Heres your winning combo imo.

I would get a handpicked head at 12*, and pure energy shaft, to pick the proper flex we need to know:

Whats your swing speed with the driver?
Hows your tempo - fast, ave, slow
transition at the top - aggressive, average, smooth
wrist**** release - late, mid, early

85-90 swingspeed
average temp, very smooth at the top (almost looks like I stop completely at the top)
my release is mid to late, if I am hitting the ball well it is later, the more I spray it and try and guide the ball the earlier my release gets.

Pure Energy in R flex then, or if you prefer a heavier shaft the tour trac 80 in R. Both are terrific shafts for so little money.

You can build this driver, brand new for less than $90 (before shipping), thats awful hard to beat.
