FW woods questions

I currently have an Adams Tight Lies 2 strong 3 wood and 5 wood. I hit the woods straight with a draw, sometimes a little more draw than I wanted. 3 wood goes about 240 to 260. The 5 wood goes 220 to 225.

Question is, with the advancement in technologies, am I falling behind in yardage? I don't want to get a new club just to get a new club. If there is an advantage, then I may break down and get one. One fw I'm looking at is the Sonartec 13 degree GS Tour for three wood. I think that may be a good start.

If I don't change the fw's, I will contemplate possibly going to a hybrid club or two to replace the 3 and possibly four iron.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Fist off, welcome to the board, you will find as you linger here longer that most of the members of this board have played just about every piece of equipment you have ever heard of and some you havent heard of.

As for you question about losing yardage with you FW's, with the numbers you posted I can't imagine getting more distance, unless you change your name to Tiger .

The only real advantage to going to some newer equipment may be more forgiveness, but thats not always a good thing IMO.

Here's my take...

First off, you have about as forgiving of a fw design that you're going to get. Even with all of today's newer offerings the Adams Tight Lies series are ridiculously easy to get in the air and extremely forgiving.

Distance wise, I agree with BigJim, I just don't see how you're going to get anymore yardage. Any gains you would see would be quite minimal at best IMHO.

Lastly, if you look into the bags of pros often times the fw are the oldest clubs in the bag. Once you find a fw that agrees with you, you play that thing until your dying day!

Wouldn't change a thing if I were you. The Adams FW's are great clubs, and if they work for you, why mess around?

You can fool around with shafts a bit, to see if the excessive draw can be tamed (is that your normal ballflight?) but chasing technology is not always the best thing. If those clubs work for you, then there's no reason to switch, especially if forgiveness is something you seek. As chemboy said, the Adams FW's are as forgiving as it gets. If you need more workability, then yeah, you'll want to look at something like the Titleist or Sonartec offerings. Otherwise, stay the course.

Wow You guys bring up some good points that I really hadn't thought about. I do hit the fw's really well. I was just thinking that it's been quite a few years since I bought them and was getting passed by technology.

With all that in mind, what are your takes for hybrids replacing long irons? Again, I hit the clubs pretty good, but there's always room for improvement. If I understand it right, the hybrids will have the same loft as the iron, but it will travel farther due to the design of the club? I don't know, just throwing this out there.

I probably just need more range time, like everyone else. And probably a lesson since I'm self taught.

Thanks for the input.

I carry a hybrid for my 3 iron. It took me awhile to find one that I liked and felt good and gave me a good flight, and I am not 100% sold on the one I have now. Go to a place like Golfmith or someplace that you can hit EVERY hybrid they have until you find one you like. Thats what I wish I had done and should still do. Instead I chose to buy one off ebay, hit it, not like it and sell it to get another one, hit it-not like it and so on...

On another note- I just looked at you sig, are you really carrying a 7.5* driver???

Believe it or not, yes. I have hit many drivers with a higher degree loft from 8.5 to 10.5 and with different shafts in them. This driver has a great ball flight, not too low and not too high. I normally hit a high ball and this driver is the ONE for me. I am averaging 280ish off the tee on a consistant basis. I played the other day and launched one with a two club wind and drove it 340-350. Unreal. I did go to a club fitter about six or seven years ago and was fitted with this club.
