Irons question

I am in search of a new set of irons for the upcoming season. I have had my eye on the taylormade r7draw since the end of fall. I recently had an oppertunity to hit a dozen at a golf show, my swing spead was much better and i was hitting about 15-20 yards longer than before. Im not sure if thats because of the weight lifting i have been doing but im sure that wasnt the only reason. Now my question begins... I do not normally hit a draw, i have just recently overcome a big slicing problem. Are these irons playable for someone learning to hit a draw?

Have you seen the lofts on the R7 draw irons?

Very strong lofts on these, 44* PW is the same loft as the 9 iron on your Armour's. This could (will) account for a large portion of your distance gain.

good point. I am more concerned with the draw issue. Some of the reviews i have been reading say that they are hard to address with because of the angle. i may go with the regular r7 irons.

more input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I have nothing to add because of my hatred for TM, but you spelt Accuflex wrong in your sig.

No big deal.

They're ok. They are a lot better than the Nike CPR 2 iron set I had before them. I can't say anything bad about them but I have hit irons that feel better.

The issue you have at address I don't have. They set up fine for me. I do like the look of the newer Mizuno line, but the draw doesn't look bad. For most people on this site the top line is probably way too thick. They feel good for a cast iron and are very forgiving.

As Lyle said, and I posted the gaps in loft are a bit strange. You'll need a separate "real" pitching wedge. I posted in the equipment section under "Loft gaps". There is a list of all the lofts of the draw set.

Are you still in the market for them?

I'm obviously biased since I play them. But you really should check out Srixon. The new i704's are gorgeous but the i506's I'm playing look great as well. And can be had pretty cheap now that the 704's are out. They are fairly forgiving on miss hit shots, and when you hit the sweet spot they feel SWEET.

Please dont get r7 draws. They will make you have bad habits that will destroy your game. Unless you dont wanna practice or work at getting better. Try an iron like the normal r7, which already will fix your slice, or pick up some r7 tp's and pick up some lessons (strong grip and drop it from the inside). Good Luck and make sure to try other companies.

What bad habits can you learn from the draws? I've had them for less than a year and have gotten significantly better.

From your previous posts on this forum I understand what kind of post this is. If the kid hit the draws and feels confident in them don't try to sway his decision with useless propaganda.

Sure there is a little more heel weighting with the draws but really is "draw" technology that great that it will cure your slice? I don't think so. I would say it's more of a confidence thing. Your club says draw so you feel as if you won't slice it as much with that club.

J-I would say just go get fitted spend the 25 or so to hit a bunch of different irons and find out which one feels the best. Then use that to go to global, eBay or a few other reatailers which have the draws on closeout right now.

Draw irons

I tend to avoid hitting any draw improvement irons or woods because I hit a natural draw.

I do tend agree with blade hater. It is probably best to work a few kinks out of your swing rather than getting something that sits extremely closed at address. But if the draws are going to make you enjoy the game more, go for it!

I play the R7 Irons (not the TPs or draws). These clubs are very easy to hit. They allow me to work both a draw and a fade. I wouldn't say they are the best club for a beginner or a player who struggles with a slice or a hook. There are better, easier to hit clubs out there for the troubled swing.

My advice is to go get fitted. Hit 5-8 different 7 irons. Good luck!

If you are looking at giving your set the TLT treatment you will want to look something that is forged. You will never be able to bend something like TM r7 draw irons anywhere near enough without spidering or breaking the hosels.

Talking about developing bad habits and then telling the guy to go to a strong grip and drop it from the inside? Thats comical. Anyways...

I would agree with you that r7 draws are probly not the way to go, go with the regular r7, which is virtually the same club and put a piece of lead tape on the heels to correct the slice, then take the tape off, its like having both sets.

I will also have you know that the r7 draws are being discontinued this year, so if you really like them and would prefer to get them cheap, good chance you can get brand new ones at a real low price in the next couple of weeks when taylor releases the rest of their new line. but you never heard that from me...

If "draw" clubs will help you hit a straighter shot, use them. Take advances in technology and reap the benefits. If I used a MacGregor Persimmon driver, would it make me develop a better swing, or would I hit bad short drives?

Don't make things harder than they are, if your swing works with R7 Draw irons, then use what works for you.

My .02 - YMMV.

Not quite. The difference in weight distribution is huge. You would need a boat load of lead tape to even come close the difference between the 2 sets.

fair enough, i made too much of a generalization, i meant they look virtually the same, with the r7 having a slightly thinner topline than the draw. also, with the head already closed, MOST golfers do not actually NEED the draw, hence why taylor is discontinuing the entire line.
