clubs for a girl

my sister decided she would take up golf - she had a lesson or two as a kid but was never really serious about it and always used my clubs or my grandmother's clubs

she goes to a golf store and starts looking at clubs

the "pro" shows her some of the ladies clubs and takes a look and waggles a few of them....then comments "they feel kinda short - got anything longer? maybe a little heavier too?"

he tells her "clubs only come in one size." She makes a face at him and says, "so my 5'6" brother and my 6'6" boyfriend would use the same size clubs?" he responds "yes" and she says "that's ridiculous, I'll have to talk to him" and leaves

she came up to visit for easter and tells me the story - I decided I'd build her a set. she looks through a few catalogs and it should be be too hard to find heads/grips she likes

to pick a shaft I figured I'd need to watch her swing a few time with some of the stuff I had at home and measure swingspeed

I throw a few whiffle balls in the yard and set up the swingspeed radar/ tempo timer

her first swing with my 5 iron had a tempo of 1.0 and a speed of 83mph
then she did it again 3 more times.....

I told her to slow it down a little and not try to kill it - she says "OK, i'll try"
next three swings - tempo 1.1-1.2 swing speed 76-79mph

she swings basically just as hard as I do but her swing looks effortless
(she played competitive softball for years, but it hurts when your little sister can hit the ball as far as you can )

I probably should have just given her my bag and sent her home....
if she starts practicing, I think i'm in trouble

her 36" WTF made the "standard ladies" clubs feel a bit short - go figure

My GF is 5'8" and her WTF is also 36". I bought her a cheap used set of graphite shafted L flex irons and they are 1" shorter than my irons. They "look" a tiny bit short for her, so I may eventually add extensions to them.

The nice thing about graphite is that after adding 1" they will still be light enough for her to swing.

The bad thing is that I actualy hit her irons better than I do mine.

How did I know that "clubs for a girl" would attract Doc....

My sister is a natural golfer too. Just swings without caring. We played a par 3 course a couple years ago with my brother, and she beat his ass hands down. He was pretty embarrassed about it.

Stupid question, but what does a "tempo of 1.2" mean?

1.2 seconds between the start of the backswing and the club coming through the ball on the downswing - the radar thing measures it

Is this your polite way of saying that we should all be playing off the red tee's?

Heck, it's bad enough that my wife keeps it in the fairway all the time, if she starts blasting it 20 yards past me as well, I'm going back to bowling. So Rick, what kind of bowling ball do you have in mind?

edit 1 - I also see your bag is listed as "Currently under Construction", is that because you just gave her your bag? I hope you at least made enough to get your new "clubs for a girl" as the title says

Gotcha. Do you put any creedence in the "Tour Tempo" concept (backswing:downswing ratio = 3:1)?

I measured my swing and found I took 27 frames in my backswing, and 9 frames in my downswing (27:9), which works out to 1.2sec, and a perfect 3:1 ratio.

What if my swing was 21:15? That would also be 1.2secs, but would be a pretty ugly 1.4:1 ratio.

I didn't want to prematurely update the signature, but it's probably time - I got my last shipping confirmation today, so I'll give it a shot

I'm not sure about the Tour Tempo thing - I've seen a few posts about it, but I see it more as a shaft fitting parameter than anything else - my tempo is around 1.35 on this silly radar thing

my brother in law is more of a "hitter" and his tempo is always less than 1s

I found it interesting, in that no matter what the "time to swing", i.e. 1 sec, 1.5 sec, the pros all measured at a 3:1 ratio. Some were 21:7 frames (or 1 sec.) and some were 27:9 (or 1.2 sec., but they all kept the ratio at 3:1.

I see it as the true measure of tempo.

I haven't read enough about it - is the "frames" the high speed photography? - I'm afraid of what it would look like if i could see my own swing

Normal video, which is 30 frames per second. So in my swing, it takes 27 frames to complete the backswing, and 9 frames to complete the downswing. Total 36 frames. 36 frames divided by 30 frames/sec. = 1.2 sec.

Any video editing software (or even VCR) should be able to play back frame-by-frame.

Man up and go for it the tee box is up here. If you can live w/ yourself go ahead and hit from there. I'd be pretty mad if he hit the whole pack of D2's with my driver. I don't know if you ever went to the old Top Flite D2 site but that was a funny video.
***Edit here's a link watch the vid and tell me this doesn't totally go along with what we are talking about here
