What do you rec. for a noobie?

Hey everyone! I just started playing golf and love it! Here's my problem and I look forward for your assistance.

When I started I bought a 200 off brand set from a local shop cause I didn't want to invest in something I might not like. Well.. I love it, however, you get what you pay for. My driver and 3 wood broke. The heads flew off. I assumed it might have been me however my best friend bought the same set and he had the same thing happen..

Anyways, I am in the market now for a REAL set, (callaway, ping, adams, titleist, nike.. etc).. But I won't lie, I don't know what I need.

What could I piece together for under 700? Bag, Driver, Woods, Irons (maybe, like i said i might keep the ones i got for now), putter, and wedges...

I have been eyeing Callaway brand the most... I'd prefer the brands match..

Go get fit. Best investment you'll ever make.

Hit everything your eye pulls you to. Then, buy what works best.

Sometimes, keeping it simple is the best way to approach things. ANd this coming from one of the biggest club ho's you'll see on this site. Do yourself a favour and get fit for some clubs. You'll thank me in the long run.

Welcome aboard, by the way.

I picked up some Nike CPR 2's off ebay without getting fit and it hurt my game a lot.

Getting fit is really the best way to go. I was looking for just a club that looked cool and was supposedly easy to hit. After getting fit for "my swing" it made golf much more enjoyable.

I'd say a Driver and a few hybrids 3,4 maybe 5. Then either 5-pw or 6-pw. A few wedges 52 and 56 and a putter.

It's up to you if you want a 3w. It was a tough club for me to hit at first. You can pick up a used 3w really cheap on Global Golf.

You could easily get a fully matched brand set for under $700 on GG.

My bad.

Well, get some irons. Even used. And a good 3 wood. Your putter can be whatever you have now if you're comfortable with it.

Don't worry about anything beyond a PW at this point. And a hybrid might not be a bad idea to replace some longer irons.

Just some suggestions...

I appreciate the replies.. I just think I might have got ahead of myself with the questions... What I want to know is what do you think a starting player needs? Not what brand, or etc, but what kind of irons and woods and wedges... instead of a 3,5,7 wood and a 1 driver maybe i just should get a driver and a 3? and irons with a sw and lw.. or pw...? does that make since? I'm sorry for the confusion.

Get some irons and groove your swing, Adams usually work well, inexpensive and solid beginner clubs, then get some lessons.

After lessons, get fitted, and probably hit Lyle up with your stats since he can usually get you a killer deal as opposed to going someplace like Dick's, and exactly what you want/need.

My .02, since in golf there is nothing concrete.

The set I bought came with:
Tour X MG-400 17-Piece men's Golf Set with Hybrid

Set Includes:

* 3 - Oversized Titanium Matrix graphite Shafted metal Woods featuring a 460CC Driver
* 1 - Perimeter-Weighted hybrid
* 7 - Deep Cavity Irons
* 1 - TOUR X MG-400 cavity Back Putter
* 1 - Deluxe Lightweight Dual Strap Stand bag with Hood
* 4 - Matching Headcovers
* Available: Men's LH and RH

Above is the link to what I bought. But now I lack a 1 Driver and a 3W... I was thinking about keeping what I have left but buying a Callaway Hyper-X driver and 3Wood.. But I kinda wanna just replace everything since I bought a bunch of junk.

Show of hands - how many are actually playing clubs that are fitted to their specs - and I'm not talking inch over since your Zedeno Chara tall either... I mean strike pad, wrist measurment the whole 9 yards.

Just curious... I tried it and it backfired for me, but given time prolly would have been worth it. I'd definitely recommend the experience tho.

I was thinking about buying a Callaway Hyper X Tour Driver (460cc) and a Callaway X Tour Fairway 3 Wood as replacements for my crappy tour-x stuff that broke.

My irons now are fit to me. Not TLT but fit by a professional.

The P2's will be TLT'd this weekend.

After that I may TLT and MOI match everything in the bag.

If you don't want to get fit just go demo some drivers. Don't just buy one without hitting it.

Then look on the net for some good prices. Like I said before Global Golf is a great site that sells used clubs that are in great condition.
