club assembly / tip trim question

I'm getting ready to put my sticks together and have a question.

Some of the hybrid heads I'm going to use as long iron replacements have pretty low weights.
For example, my "4 iron" is going to be the lynx black cat 22* hybrid. It's spec weight is only 239g
Golfsmith.com: Lynx BC Tour Carbon Crown Hybrid Head - Lynx

based on the rest of my irons, Untitled Document
that's a 3 iron headweight

so, since I'm building this club as a 4 iron, I originally figured I'd tip the shaft like a 4 iron and add weight to get to the desired swingweight

having now thought about it, it seems to make more sense to tip trim like a 3 iron (based on its weight)

If I do this, will butt trimming to length will get me to the same place as tip trimming like a 4 iron and adding weight to get the head up to 4 iron spec?

I think it will, but figured I'd ask

The 5 iron is even further from spec - the weight of my SMT head is only 244g while a normal 5i head would be ~254g

Thanks

I would consider tipping it a little more than you would for a four iron. My thinking is that since it is a hybrid, it will have a greater launch and spin over a normal iron. I understand what you're saying about head weight, but if you are matching swingweights, you'll probably end up adding the difference in weight to get the SW right.

Personally, if I replace an iron with a hybrid, I use a stiffer shaft to try to keep the ballflight closer to the same. But, I'm just an amateur clubbuilder, so the advice found here in could all be BS.

the SMT hybrid head is 26* instead of 27* for a normal iron - I figured with the higher ball flight there wouldn't be a big yardage gap between this and my 31* 6 iron

I see what you're saying though - makes sense

anyone else have any thoughts?

it took til now (almost 12 hours later) for this to sink in and make sense to me - you're right

if you're cutting to 4 iron length, you need to trim it like a 4 iron even if the head starts out light - to get the final swingweight right, I'm going to be adding enough weight to make it swingweight like a 4 iron

Thanks
