Scotty Cameron Studio Select Review

I've set the Studio Select Newport at about 35" and it's got a 340 Gram head. I gripped it with a Baby-T grip, which is my grip of choice since I never liked the feel of the cord grips. I took a couple of other 340 gram putters with me, a 34/340 Mil-Spec, my 35/340 Palombi Beach 389 (current gamer), and as a sort of control a 35/330 Pre-Titleist Classic (probably a little light of 330). I wanted to stay with commonly available OTR’s so I left tour putters out of the mix. I also wanted to stay consistent with styles so I stuck to Newport style heads.

I’m not a great artist with a putter, and am probably pretty close to average. 32 putts makes my happy, and 38 or 40 is a bad day. I’ll rarely drop a 20 footer, and rarely miss within 4-5 feet. On lag putts, I’ll get 3 of 4 within 10% on most days. Occasionally one will drop, and sometimes they’ll be either way short or in the next county, but on line.

I rolled about 100 putts on a crappy, lumpy, combination bermuda and weed green at a ghetto range, and then rolled a couple of hundred on a large, well tended bent grass green.

The Select appeared slightly more substantial at set-up than the others. The misted stainless finish is well known and accepted. It's got clean lines and sets up square with a good look at the ball. I like the translucent red paint fill, but like most things cosmetic, aren't really important in the cosmic scheme of things.

The studio Select Newport has a higher toe than other Newports, this is good for my eye since I've got a tendency to drop my hands at address and set up with the toe in the air. That causes me to pull putts left a bit, not really a Thurman Munson (Dead Yank), but a pull. The higher toe seems to help. I didn't notice any tendency to miss left with the select, but with the Classic and the Mil-Spec I still pulled them some.

Stroking through the ball left a very satisfying feel, somewhere between a whoosh and a click. The Mil-Spec is a definite click, the Select, the Palombi and the Classic were very similar in sound and feel, a very comforting thud, with the Select being more muted and "thuddish" than the others. On the backstroke I've found a 330 gram putter a tad unstable, making long lag putts sorta random. 350 gram heads solved this, but distance control on fast greens was difficult. The takeaway on my Studio Select was smooth and stable, leaving me in better shape for a smooth stroke through the ball. This was consistent with the other 340 gram putters. The results with the Select on long putts was the same as my history, 3 of 4. I didn’t really see any improvement over the Palombi.

Short putts generally dropped for me with all the 340 gram putters, I missed 4 straight from 5 feet with the Classic, all about 1 inch to the left. Results with 10 to 15 footers were close together with all of them, I believe I was closer with the Select, but not close enough to make me go WOW!

The removable weights aren't designed to be consumer adjustable, to change the weights you'll need to get the Cameron Studio involved. That doesn't seem to be a big deal since I don't see many folks with a need to change the weights on a daily basis. How many people fritz with the weights on their TM R7's once they get them where the want them.

Bottom line…Scotty has built a nice putter, it'll get lots of play and will make a bunch of people very happy, and you can sink putts with it on a regular basis. It's not a silver bullet, and won't turn Joe Sixpack into Tiger, only brown whiskey can do that.

For me, the Palombi stays in the bag, mostly because the Select didn’t show a reason to move it out. The Select, being stainless, will definitely get the nod on wet days or on goat tracks where the oilcan finish on my Palombi needs to be a consideration.

Nice custom job on the mil-spec, a little feminin though no?

Can't say i'll be too crazy with the select if i do try it, love my platinum, and with that raised toe it'd just help my miss (block) on the greens.

Since they very recently released, prices are still close to MSRP ($325). You can find them for a little less.

I have hit with these on a practice green. as for the older model, i had better results with adding lead tape to the bottom of the club head. it resists twisting by lowering the center of gravity.

Just finished a round with the Select. 32 Putts(15/17), which is a better day for me (5 putts through the first 4 holes). It's moved into the "A" spot in my bag. Methinks this one is gonna be a big winner in the putter wars.
