I have never seen nor played that particular set, but chances are for $199 your not going to get the best of quality.

I would recommend either shopping for quality used clubs or look into building a set yourself from components if your looking to get quality clubs at a lower price. Full set for $199 New, generally are not made of the highest quality components.

The Top Flite D2 set looked pretty nice. Plus I think Callaway makes them so you could give them a shot.

I agree with ualtim, for that price, I wouldn't think you could expect much. It may be a improvement over what you're playing now, but you'd be far better off buying a used set of name brands from Global Golf. Even GG's 3 stars are in very good shape so shop around on there.

It took you 20yrs to get from 'beginner' to 'advanced' beginner? You must have worn your range balls out.

It looks like you don't need to spend too much money on golf equipment.
The TopFlite XL might be a great choice for your second set of clubs, which might last you another 20 years.

I'd agree with the others. You have a set that works for now. You should figure out what would suit you best (getting fitted would be good), then put together a set of quality clubs. Do it one club at a time, and used, to save money. That's what I plan on doing.

I'd hold off. Do some research. Stop at your local Pro shop and get your hands on a few clubs. I was in a similar situation last year and now I've got a complete set of used knock off clubs collecting dust in the garage. The price was right, but I still wasted some time and money at the range trying to hit ill fitting clubs.

I got that same price on a complete set of maxfli's at dicks. Theyre not too bad, Originally they were priced at 500 for the set.

Id say definitely not. You are much better off picking up some quality used irons. Try looking on Global Golf for some cheap equipment, but only after you have been to a local pro shop and thoroughly tested everything in sight.

"Buying off the rack" is not the best way to go if you want to improve. As others here have stated, get fitted and even if you don't buy right away keep that information. Then a good used set or components made up just for you would be the way to go. Also look into TLT (true length technology) as that seems to work well for many (LyleG, dave etc).

If you don't plan to get fitted, and only want to spend $200 or so, which I to would recommend getting fitted but doubt you can get a set fitted for under $200. Although this is not to say you can't find reliable clubs in that range, you can find Adams or possibly some older Tommy Armours irons.

Here is a set of Adams irons for $129, and woods for $119. Adams has pretty good quality clubs especially for their cheap prices. Not sure if this set would match your game, but for $129+$119 I would be inclined to believe they may be alot better quality than the $199 dollar set you are looking at in the top flights, and something you would probably be very happy with.

If I only want to spend less than $250, I would play those clubs. I did play these FW's for about 3 years and they are great clubs, although I paid around $120 for each one when I played them and they were still a good value. At $40 a piece, with 440 driver, they are a steal. Not sure if the shafts or shaft flex would meet your needs or not. Also not sure if your set included woods, but if they were only irons, I would likely take the $129 Adams even if they were the same price.

RockBottomGolf.com - Adams Golf- Tight Lies Classic 4-SW Irons Steel
RockBottomGolf.com - Adams Golf- Tight Lies Classic Driver & Fairway 1/3/5 3-Wood Set

I think some of the other people on here can likely attest to Adams quality. Although I have not personally purchased from Rockbottomgolf, I also know some of the people on here would attest to their reputation.

Ok so...i looked around on Craigslist and found a few iron sets none complete and they were all around $200 for a name brand, so i gave in bought the Top Flite Xl set.

The set is pretty nice for $200. The bag is good quality I'd guess i'd compare to a $60 bag. The Putter is something that you'd replace. The Hybrids are nice, i'm not used to hitting them, i was behind the ball 60% of the time. The driver is enormous, compared to my antiques. It hit true, long and straight. The 3 wood is oversized, and probably too big for most, still it hit ok. I can imagine using off the tee more than off the fairway because of its size. The irons 6-pw, is where i found the most improvement in my game, the old set i had were not cavity back irons. Maybe it was last night or something but i was hitting around 10 to 15 yards further with every iron. They felt solid. Like i said before i'm not a golf pro. I golf maybe 5 to 6 times a year, and plan to play more this year.

For a 2nd set or a beginner that doesn't want to pay a arm and a leg for something new. I'd definitely recommend it.
