Question Using 5 wood, 2 hybrid or 2 iron.

I heard from one of the players saying that going with either 5 wood, 2 hybrid or even a 2 iron is personal choice and does not have much to do with performance.

Do you use a 5 wood or 2 hybrid (2 iron) and why did you go with your choice?

I see most pros going with 5 wood but rarely do I see a 2 hybrid... (At least the Asian tour pros)

Isn't it more difficult to use a wood in the rough compared to hybrid as well?

Thanks.

i would imagine that its easier to use a hybrid out of the rough.

My personal choice out of all those 3 would definitely be the 2 hybrid. Just all around better.

Well im sorry i cant tell you which is better or how to hit those clubs...lol, but in my set the lofts are prob different. My 5 wood and 3 hybrid are the same loft of 19* i think. So i guess that maybe loft could play a role in your desicion. Sorry that i couldnt really help though buddy.

I just read you exact same post over on WRX.

I have both 5w and 2i. 2i is in the bag right now. It depends mostly on course conditions and the setup of the course. Length of par 5s and 4s that I would be hitting approaches in, if I need the 240 carry that can stop, or a 230 carry with the ability to roll it out more...

All depends.

that is correct, you with hybrids and 5 woods you dont want to think about the number on the sole, you want to think about the loft.

Some 3 hybrids are 19*, and some are 21*, thus throwing off the loft in the 2 hybrids. Most 5 woods are 19*, but some arent(like the r7 tp).

I have not carried a 5 wood for a long time, my 2 hybrid is 19* and I hit it slightly longer than my 2 iron simply because of the length of the shaft.
Hybrid is the easiest to get out of the rough out of the 3 choices.

I have an 18* 2i and a 18* 5w (r7 st).

The iron plays a little longer from the more boaring traj, but the 5w lands 10x softer.

Also is the fact that my 2i is like....almost an inch longer than a st. 2i length. I do that for tee shots to get a little more out of it while keeping more accuracy. On a normal 2i shot for me a grip down about an inch.

So that'd be driver off the deck vs. a 13* 3w? I'll give you my bag to see you hit anything 240carry in an 18* loft.

I've not had very good luck with hybrids less than 20* for some reason. I've got a 5W but don't use it very much.

The 5w is gonna have a longer shaft also creating a little more distance but maybe sacrificing some accuracy. I dont even carry fairway woods, although my Nickents call themselves fairways they play more like hybrids becuase the shaft is not as long. For a long par 5 I can put a good drive out there and layup and be safe with my hybrid.

He couldn't have hit a wedge out the rough with the swing he made on that shot. That was a practically a driver swing.

I have trouble hitting hybrids, the new J36 hybrid is relatively neutral, so I am considering getting one of those to have around. The J36B's don't have a 2 iron, so that eliminates that option. I really like hitting the 5 wood, with the slightly open face, I don't hook it and am able to hit a cut if I need to unlike when hitting most hybrids.

I now have an 18* 5 wood, an 18* 2 iron and a 17* hybrid. The three will rotate in and out of my bag. Wind, course style and length will determine the club that gets the nod that particular day.

I carry an 18 degree 5w, have had no luck with hybrids, but I am watching a few to try out in the 19-20 degree range. I can hit any shot with my current 5w so nothing has been able to knock it out of the bag. I haven't hit a 2 iron since high school......I had a big shovel that had a graphite shaft in it......I hit is well but I doubt any of the newer versions would do me any good.
