Is tip weighting the answer?

I've been swinging irons all winter- hitting a foam ball against the wall of my living room and letting it bounce around. No harm done. But I've become very accustomed to the weight and feel of an iron. Subtle things like the tension I get when I'm at the top of the swing from the weight of the club is my comfort zone now.

I've been hitting an r7 TP 6 iron on the launch monitor at Dick's Sporting Goods, and it feels stellar. Carrying about 175, rolling out to a total of 185-190 with a tiny draw at the very end of the flight. Perfect.

BUT- I have COMPLETELY lost the feel of the driver. Completely. According to the monitor, I'm hitting it about 210, and a gazillion yards left. Certainly it's not all the club's fault, but I really don't get a REMOTELY similar feel as I do with the irons.

I'm already considering heavier shafts, but is tip weighting something I should also consider? 10-15g more in the shaft + a tip weight? Maybe even + a backweight? I'm not real fond of the lead tape thing. Just seems tacky.

Currently, both my drivers have 65g shafts. NV and VS Proto, both in S flex. NV is in Launcher 460ti 8.5, VS is in CT250 9.5.

In all fairness I have not actually been to the range yet this year, but I've got a hunch it's gonna be snap hooks all day long with the big dogs.

you can try heavier shaft. i use 83g right now and i had to stop working out because it felt like a toothpick. all my shafts are heavy, which stablizes my backswing and the transition. But you also have to consider swingweight first. it might be that your iron and driver has too much of difference. put some lead tape on the driver head and see if it feels right.

I would try to work some of the rust off of your swing before any big changes.

Backeighting and a heavier shaft may help, but what you describe is not surprising after a long winter. Even in ONE DAY at the range, after 50 or so irons it takes me a couple of swings to adjust tp a driver, so imagine what you have done to 'muscle memory' over the whole winter.

Take a quick video of your driver swing. I'm betting you've changed it over the winter. Maybe lengthened your backswing a lot?

After swinging an iron all winter I would guess its the length of the shaft in the driver that is giving you the problems, not the weight.

tipweighting will also lower the flex of the shaft some.

Very little though.

For every 2g of weight you add to the head you will soften the flex of the shaft 1cpm with all else being equal.

I will get out work on my swing before I start making equipment changes, for sure. It just really feels like there's no resistance whatsoever in the backswing, like I'm swinging air. With the iron I feel stabilized.
