GPS Golf Guru Update

I have had the opportunity to use my Golf Guru now 5 or 6 times and I must say that this is one awesome little device. I love not having to guess at yardages, layups etc. I find that inside of 100 yards is where I this thing really pays for itself. It's not as cumbersome as a Pin Seeker (not meant to offend the laser guys - I just have trouble working them, ask Eracer and Tim lol).

When I purchaed the unit there were 0 courses in my area mapped. I have since requested 4 and they were all mapped within 7-10 days, I was very pleased with that TAT.

I am very suprised at how much I like the scoring and stat tracking. At the end of each round my score, Fairways, GIR, Putts and Putts/GIR are all calculated and downloadable to my PC. The file stores in a simple XML format, so I think maybe I'll write a parser and maybe a UI so I can keep a running average of my stats without having to input them manually

Overall, I'm a very happy customer - definitely recommended. If you are on the fence about a GPS and want lots of features - this one is great. Extremely simple to use as well for the non tech savy.

I would agree with VT 100%. I have only had my Guru out for one round so far, but it is easier than pulling the laser device out for every shot. Even with the Guru, I still had to pull the laser out once or twice to shoot an object not in the course map, but eventually the Guru software will allow you to map additional items on pre-mapped courses. I still carry both, but use to Guru 95% of time.

I played with a Scotish Fellow at weekend who had a GPS unit and was using it in the Comp. I asked him if they were R&A/USGA Conforming for tournament use and he rekons they are now? If so I may get one as they are great...it takes all the guess work out of how far your've got left and it's easy to know exactly how far you hit each club. Would be a superb item to Ho I think.

as far a I know MG, they are only legal for GUI and probably R&A comps under local rules...I'm not 100% certain but a few comps I played at different courses lately their have been local rules posted to state that the use of them was allowed

VT and ualtim: are you still happy with your Golf Guru units?

I'm thinking of getting one. There are a couple of "nearly new" ones on ebay for under $200. Can these be re-registered as the sellers claim, or would I be better off buying a new one for $250?

I don't see why they couldn't be re-registered. You are just basically plugging the unit into your PC and downloading courses and software updates.

I am still happy with my unit, although I haven't used it while on vaca here in Canada yet as the sat imagery is not good enough. All of the courses I requested in VT have been mapped tho. Plus this is the only device that I am aware of that lets you edit mapped courses to add map points. It also keeps score.

If these features aren't important to you, I'd get the SkyCaddie 2.5

All the courses I normally play are mapped so I have not had to use the mapping request yet.

Orange County National had so many points already in the database that it was almost overwelming. As it was my first visit to the course, I found the Guru to be quite helpful.

Overall, I am verry happy with the product. With very little experience I was able to pick up on the most desirable features with little to no practice times on the machine. At OCN, the carts have GPS with the exact pin placements for the day mapped which you can not get on any GPS device I am aware of, but I found myself using the Golf Guru almost exclusively as it gave front of green, center of the green, and back of green information which was more useful for my less than stellar swing.

No regrets so far.

Me personally, I would spend the extra and buy a new one. If they previous owner had not protected the screen it could be scratched up.

I golfed with a guy that uses a gps...very interesting to say the least..He could mark the spot where he hit it to where the ball landed.

Does this thing have any sort of additional fee? Doesn't the Skycaddie have some monthly or yearly fee attatched with it?

Golf Guru does not have any additional fees. Buy the unit and thats it. Unlimited course downloads and software updates for free.

Here's a really good chart and review of all the top selling models. The Guru features as the number one recommended model for anyone wanting to spend less than $250.00. It comes out at number 2 for models under $350.00!
Interesting.
